Summary:

I downvoted pro-AI comments in a post in leftymemes community. It was LLM generated polandball comic (Which is objectively pathetic as fuck) that showed up on my feed, blocked couple of users who I thought were unhinged, and have blocked the whole instance on my client after realizing how rabid these morons are.

I didn’t go looking for AI posts like a vigilante.

One user in question got miffed for being downvoted and banned me from places they moderate.

I’ve seen a few tankies buying hard into the “AI” grift. Gotta remember these people support the attack on ukraine. They’re easily misled due to their support of authoritarianism, etc.

But on the other hand… That particular comm is for people who enjoy generated art. They don’t want to hear the same old attacks… I dunno about a downvote though.

Sorry to cut in, but dbzer0 is NOT a tankie instance, it’s an anarchist community. From my perspective we are pro-ukraine, pro-ai because fuck copyrights and very far from authorianism, and we protect our own.

As you said, this does not come out of nowhere. The instance rule against anti-ai-commenting in our communities stems from some very unpleasant visits from people who are pretty misled regarding AI, which leads to lots of off-topic discussion and comment trolling (for example under a polandball meme, where the way it was created is completely irrelevant).

This rule was voted on by our community , and says:

      • To protect our communities, community members and mods from abuse: no comment trolling, dogpiling, or downvote trolling is allowed.

This rule only applies to communities where GenAI is not disallowed by community rules, so mods can opt in or out.

On the whole i would say our instance does not agree with what is done with the technology by the corpos, dislike that it is shoved into everything even if it doesn’t belong there, but acknowledge that it is a tool like any other to express oneself creatively. The problem is capitalism, not GenAI.

Enabling people to realize creative ideas on the fly without having to learn every skill to get an acceptable result, or reducing the amount of work needed, is exactly what it is for - just like a shovel makes digging a hole very much faster than using bare hands.

Anti-GenAI users have plenty of platforms to share their view, and it is not ok to come barging into the few places where GenAI is expressly allowed or even the main theme of the community.

Edited to add: Copyrights in their current form are just legal weaponry wieded by corpos against simple users (remember how they sued simple people for downloading crappy pop songs? That’s the pro-copyright-side) and against artists themselves.

In an ideal world, creation of the datasets would be a mission for UNO, for creating a snapshot of human culture. The datasets should be free to use in noncommercial settings and paid if used commercially, to generate income to distribute to artists, who can opt out if they don’t want their work included. That’s at least what i would wish that the future holds for us.
