I know not everyone is in a position where they can just ignore management, and maybe I’ve just been in more blue collar jobs where ignoring management is normalized. But unless they’re literally looking over your shoulder, what they don’t know won’t hurt them. It’s not like AI is more efficient once you count the extra debug time.

Yeah, but honestly getting rid of coins is an admission that inflation is high relative to 40-50 years ago. When pretty much every government wants to keep that fact out of the public consciousness. Especially the current US government who wants to both claim we don’t have inflation at all, and are the ones getting rid of the penny.

I’ve been saying we should drop the penny for almost 2 decades, but I still kind of look at getting rid of the penny as a sign of our current government’s abysmal handling of inflation.

Honestly, while Pepsi isn’t a great company either, if they made an ad pointing out how much “their competitor” spent in water, electricity, etc. on making an ad using AI, and then included that “since AI-generated content can’t be copyrighted, we stole it and paid an intern 1 million dollars to replace the logo with our own” and then just play the ad with the trucks drawn over like in a school notebook to be blue pepsi trucks with the pepsi logo.

I think if a big company went all in on being a world-class AI hater, they’d do really well. It’s kinda a huge untapped market as consumer sentiment against AI grows because it’s being pushed so hard.

It’s the physics that make it look uncanny. Just the weight of that much liquid puts significantly more stress on flexible plastic. The only way it could still look like a puffer jacket would be if it was made of hard plastic which would be then impossible to put on or take off. Now I’ll admit I’ve probably had more experience with bagged liquids than most other Americans, considering I’ve worked with bagged milk in the food service industry, and I also prefer to take the bag out of box wine like Australians do. So maybe that’s why just the general shape triggers the AI alarm bells for me.

They’re just applying their business tactics to Christianity now. I doubt they’ve realized the power of religion to drive them certifiably insane during the “embrace” phase.

Depending on how much you have set aside it can work, if you don’t have anything set aside and break a leg in a freak accident you can get stuck making massive payments on $20,000+ of medical debt and set yourself back several years. I’m sure it’s gotten more expensive now too, that was 6 years ago, and while I don’t have the debt any more, I also have complications from the surgery that still bother me that I feel like I can’t afford to get fixed.

That said, a high deductible plan can also leave you screwed, and doesn’t save you as much money as they act like it does. The pricing is different for insured vs uninsured patients, and your insurance company has basically negotiated the rates higher so you think they’re more useful than they actually are.

Also, when donating to local food pantries, remember that donations of money go farther and feed more than donations of food. Food pantries have access to economies of scale and can buy food cheaper than an individual can. So you’ll increase your impact if you just donate your cash straight to the food pantry, rather than going to the grocery store to buy food to donate. In addition, the food pantry will be able to more accurately supply what people actually need and stock what they are short on, rather than you just guessing.

Started moving to Element/Matrix this weekend when I attended a protest and wanted to have some kind of communication, but also wanted to leave my primary phone at home. I was using a de-googled android fork and an e-sim, but being a data-only e-sim, I couldn’t use Signal due to the phone number requirement.

Annoying to have try to get contacts to get another app, but at least it’s decentralized and comes with the option of being self-hosted once I’m ready to tackle that.

This has been a Microsoft wishlist feature since the 90s. I remember being a kid and reading articles in my dad’s copies of PC Magazine that Bill Gates wanted a computer without a keyboard that you could just talk to and tell it what to do.

Absolutely agree that to be called open source the training data should also be open. It would also pretty much mean that true open source models would be ethically trained.

Mine aren’t quite that long, but are similar. And I’m a guy. I get really severe ingrown toenails if I keep mine trimmed too short, but don’t have any issues as long as I keep them grown out past the skin. Yes, they’re annoying, and took getting used to. I can still wear closed-toed shoes (occasionally I buy a size larger if the shape of the shoe feels tight on my nails). It all still beats the pain and occasional bloody socks from my nails cutting into my toes as they grow.

It can’t do anything to help anyone, but it’s essentially a mobile Flock camera with license plate tracking and facial recognition. It’s a privacy nightmare, and a massive legal liability for the city (Benn Jordan has an excellent video on his YouTube about Flock cameras and how bad they are). Best case scenario is it drives through a deep puddle during the next hurricane and shorts itself out.

I have a bunch of different zigbee models, but my overall favorites are the Sengled Zigbee plugs. They have power monitoring, which can be really useful for automations.

For example, my computer monitor makes an annoying high-pitched squeal when in standby mode, so I have it and my PC on separate Sengled smart plugs and if the PC plug is drawing low enough wattage for 10 seconds that I can be sure it’s off or asleep, my automation turns off the monitor smart plug, and when the PC plug wattage jumps back above the threshold, the monitor plug gives power to my monitor again.

Obviously that specific use is a bit niche, but the ability to know when not-smart devices are using more or less power and run automations accordingly can be really useful.

There are other brands besides Sengled that have power monitoring, but I’ve found theirs to be pretty reliable, just make sure you get the zigbee plugs, because they also make wifi plugs that look basically identical to the zigbee model.

I’ve heard they are generally accurate but that there are better sources, unfortunately I haven’t heard specifically what those better sources are.

If anything eventually it’ll be like gardening seeds. Where yeah, there’s a lot of hybrid seeds that might be good for certain traits, but what a bunch of gardeners really want are heirloom varieties that are more naturally-selected and therefore more reliable over multiple generations.
