Trump had a quote where he basically said he thought the whole trans people are mass shooters thing was bullshit. His heart isn’t really in the transphobia thing, though he’s happy to let other people go in on it, which isn’t any better.

Trump during a campaign rally in NC last year:

“You see I’m talking about cutting taxes and people go like that (small clap), I talk about transgender everybody goes crazy! Who would’ve thought? 5 years ago you didn’t know what the hell it was!”

Not that it matters because he is passing anti-trans legislation and is surrounded by transphobic fascists, but it is interesting how he basically just doesn’t care.

There’s a NRA member survey from 2023 I think that found fairly broad support for trans gun rights. The interesting part is that the 60+ age bracket was better about it than the 16-30 age bracket by something like 10-20 points. I’ll try to find a link later to the details.

    e: https://web.archive.org/web/20250720181642/https://www.ammunitiontogo.com/lodge/nra-member-survey/

Fewer than 22% of National Rifle Association members surveyed believe a person who has undergone gender reassignment surgery should have their firearms taken from them. 28% of respondents are undecided on the issue.

The age group most supportive of trans-gun rights was the oldest segment of our survey. Just 18% of those 60 years old and older believe gender-reassignment is grounds for firearm confiscation. 29% of the the 18-30 year old respondents felt gender-reassignment surgery recipients should have their guns taken away.

So only a 11% difference, but still interesting.

Thing is, that’s not Transgender, just Transsexual.

Ideally there wouldn’t be a distinction in the legal sense, but for example Cuba had to amend its laws to allow trans people to get corrected legal IDs. The old law required sex reassignment surgery, but this eventually became due to the US blockade reducing supplies for non-urgent ops.

Many people who we’d consider brutal transphobes may be accepting of trans people who have undergone SRS (something seen in a recent spat between Reform UK politicians) the same people are denying rights for people to obtain those surgeries, thus keeping them in a class of folks being slandered as “delusional cross-dressers”. (And, just as a note, not all trans people want SRS, but many have to just to obtain legal status!)

The distinction has been made to make the argument to deny the rights of trans people easier: If we claim anyone without SRS but is Trans are mentally ill, we can deny them civil liberties that would be harder to restrict if we had to acknowledge that our idea of gender being “your private dangly bits” falls apart if we let any of them get surgeries that modify those bits.

It’s a bit like how black people and other minority groups can some acceptance under the whote supremacist state if theh accrue political capital and wealth. The system, that doesn’t wish to admit that nonwhites are capable of social mobility, simply focusses on denying rights to the poorer section of these communities who are thus easy targets for the “fbi crime statistics” gang.

This is good point to highlight. This dynamic of “passing privileges” is definitely part of the recuperation of radicalism back into the liberal status quo. Much like “model minority” and other similar processes that coerce people to contort themselves in the hope of acceptance as “one of the good ones”.

NRA sees an opportunity to gain opportunist liberal supporters who will jump on board with them as an anti-Trump thing without any significant loss of their existing supporters who don’t support the org because of Trump. They supported the org before Trump because they sincerely support owning guns and they will continue to do so when Trump is gone.

They see only potential to gain by taking this position.
