    I open discord.

Some popup gets in my way.

I look for the x and close it.

    I go check messages.

    I close discord.

This has been going on for years. I still don’t know what “Nitro” is. Other than forums, my understanding of Discord and usage of it is basically the same as it was in like 2015 or 16 when I had to quit using Skype and switch to Discord because Skype finally broke the tricks I was using to block its in-app ads.

IRC doesn’t really work on the modern internet where there are moderation concerns beyond a 14 year old with a spam script.

The XMPP folks are slowly picking away at being able to do grouped chatrooms over that protocol. Hopefully they figure that out before Discord completely implodes.

IRC v3 protocol was an attempt to modernize, and if the market didn’t fragment there surely would have been more changes to become more modern.

XMPP, likewise had similar issues. Google and Facebook embraced then extinguished it.

I have no idea how it even caught on. It was like one day, everyone wanted to be on discord to chat.

“We’re literally playing a game with in-game voice chat. Just use that?”

“No bro let’s run a third party app in the background that increases latency trust me bro just get discord bro.”

Just why? It isn’t secure or private. It doesn’t do anything we weren’t already doing with existing technology. Where did it even come from?

i hate discord as much as the next person but i don’t think it’s that weird, it is quite nice to have a centralised voice+text zone for your gamer buddies or whatever. my group just got sick of skype getting worse one day and switched. now we await the next alternative because discord has gotten to suck so bad too

One of the FAANG companies is selling all people’s info from Discord. Can’t recall which. I took it off my phone and only use it on a Windows machine that I use for stupid shit like checking my mostly unused gmail and Discord.

This part isn’t that weird if you’re playing with friends. You’ll probably want to get everyone together and make sure everone’s mics work before you fire up the game or try to load into the same match. Also if you’re playing with friends you’re probably also just gonna talk about stuff you don’t want randos to hear.

Before Discord, my friend group used Skype and Steam Chat for this purpose on PC, but also Xbox Live’s party chat back when the Xbox 360 was a thing

You’re also putting yourself at a disadvantage if playing something with proximity voice with randoms. It’s against the spirit of the game, but literally everyone else will not be relying on proximity chat, they will be in Discord or whatever.

      • Seriously. I downloaded it once, realized it’s like shitty slack (and slack is already shitty slack) , uninstalled. Call me old, but I don’t want to be part of a community that uses discord as it’s main means of communication.

Maybe this is how usenet or mailing list people felt about forums 20 years ago.

They also use AI on the backend to identity users’ gender (linky) I have no idea if it works or not, but given the situation in the States and UK right now, that shit could get real ugly, real fast.

Imagine the state just paid the <200k a year (fuck IDK) needed for server costs, and all development was done by volunteers, in an open source environment.

discord sucks but there isn’t a good enough replacement yet that fills the same niche. tbh i’d be happy to pay a small monthly fee that goes towards maintenance costs of an open source app that doesn’t feel the need to do all this bullshit and provides the features discord had 5 years ago, more than i’d be happy to pay for discord nitro.
