I’m curious why the GOP seems to be actively pursuing a shutdown right now, that they have full trilateral control over the Federal Government. Trump already isn’t bothering to staff or govern the administrations they don’t like, it seems like this would only hamper their goals with ICE & DHS, right?

Is there even an actual goal here? Or are they betting on Schumer et al caving at the last possible nanosecond?

Grover Norquist, who founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 at the urging of President Reagan, declared in 2001: “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”

        https://theconversation.com/the-shutdown-drowning-government-in-the-bathtub-111333

They are ideologically opposed to the government doing basically anything other than police and military duties, and having the bare minimum legal system required to facilitate criminal convictions for the poor, and the contract emforcement of private business.

Basically, they want the level of government that exists in Night City from Cyberpunk 2077, but probably without mass transit or even public roads.

This is what Rush Limbaugh’s ditto hesds have been told they want for about 40 years, and now they are just doing it.

You can prosecute people for thought crimes snd not being the right sexuality or religion or skin color with this, so, that’s all good with them.

I loved that yesterday Vance claimed that he wanted to work with Dems on not cutting health care, and they should fund the government, then work with the GOP on healthcare.

This guy is such a liar. The GOP absolutely refused to work with the Dems during the creation of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” despite very loud calls to not cut healthcare to fund billionaire tax cuts.

This is precisely what good leadership from Dems would be in this moment.

Instead they are getting clowned on after claiming to be “getting through” to Trump in negotiations.

It’s truly pathetic how hard Dems are working to maintain the facade that they aren’t controlled opposition and the government is still somehow functioning. If they worked half as hard for the working class they’d never lose another election in our lifetimes.

I would argue it could be the best case scenario for Trump as well.

If we’re talking purely politics (and not the actual suffering Trump’s policies have and will cause), not shutting down the government in march was a huge win for Dems and a huge fail for Trump.

I think things are much more complicated than most people on Lemmy want to admit. They want to throw the baby out with the bath water cause the leadership isn’t doing exactly what they want. When in reality, it is a much more complicated decision filled with landmines no matter which you choose.

Meanwhile they also aren’t looking back 6 months ago when they were complaining about the same leaders and the same decisions. And in the end, it was the leadership that made the right decision, not the community.

The only people that were really happy with the budget approval in March were Republicans. Everyone on here was livid with Democrats.

What happened after? Trump’s approval rating went from net 0 to net -9. Would this have happened if Democrats shut the government down?

I don’t think so, but who knows. I think Trump and Republicans would play the victim (which they are great at) and anything bad that came after would be blamed on Dems, including any damage from the tariffs.

Right now we’re in a situation where conservative voters are not happy with the administration. There are pros and cons to shutting the government down, and people on here do not consider the cons at all.

American memories are apparently nonexistent, if this were to happen a lot closer to an election you would have a lot of fresh memories of government employees looking to remove republicans from office because they stopped paychecks from coming in. But given 6 months everyone will forget about it

My fear is Trump would use a government shutdown to further his authoritarian powers. And he would feel empowered to do so because of the “radical left that shut the government down”.

It could go either way, which means it is a risk to shut the government down. It’s easy for Lemmy to say we should take the risk, but the Democratic Party is much more diverse politically than republicans. Their people will rally around them no matter what.

There are hardly any left leaning congressmen left. The Overton window has been shoved so far to the right for decades that most Democrats are right of center, neo-liberal corporatists.

Even if you got rid of most of the Democratic Party, there’s only a handful that are not right of center. There is no such thing as a progressive part of the Democratic Party.

The stark reality is that the government has been so corrupted and under funded for so long there isn’t money for big public works projects or to overhaul the medical system or really innovate or build new things because it just going into corporate shareholders pockets.

The American people have been duped and the wealth of the nation has been transferred to Wall Street over the course of the last several decades. The corporations are flush with cash, and the country is falling apart. Since corporations and the wealthy elite don’t pay their fair share taxes, and keep taking all the cookies out of the jar, everybody’s fucked and fighting with each other instead of uniting to get these corrupt assholes out of politics.

The very fact that all these tech bro, billionaires have seized control of the government along with white nationalist crysto-fascist think tanks, like the heritage foundation, shows the weakness of the American style government.

Why should we listen to you when you have no idea what words even mean? The moderates are the liberals!

On top of that, your argument is ass-backwards anyway, even after we interpret it as you meant (“the truest most leftist of politicians”) instead of as you said.

By your logic, since the MAGAs successfully pushed all the moderates out of the Republican Party so we’re left with only the truest most fascist of politicians, they went on to win only 20 Senate seats and never saw the presidency again.

Well the Republicans are currently doing whatever they want because the Democratic party has been so utterly worthless for so long.

They can’t fight against fascism in an election and barrel to the right. They can’t fight fascism when they’ve lost and the fascists are in power.

The Dems deserve every ounce of vitriol they are getting right now they are a fundamentally useless organization that only serves as the slightly less mean wing of conservative thought in the US.

Edit: Also yes you are absolutely advocating for the moderate/centrist liberal approach here.

          Huh?

Yes, there are definitely accelerationists (both tankies and useful idiots) who just want to watch things burn.

But this? I can see the logic. But there is zero chance that resolution would have passed and this is just republicans shutting the government down a few hours early rather than bickering until the last minute.

For DNC leadership that insists on decorum and tradition? Yeah, that is atrocious and horrible and an even greater sin than not properly clapping for someone. But it doesn’t matter to anyone else. This is now a war of the news and social media and not one that is going to be solved while in session.

And all this comes across as is… weakness.

            exactly

Hence the comment about the worthlessness of current leadership. Shutting the government. down shuts down project 2025. It forces the gestapo to work unpaid. That might last a week, but two, three weeks? That shit doesn’t fly when you are deployed to fucking Chicago and you are now paying for shit out of pocket.

Democratic leaders are cowards who are afraid to wield force, and they have the perfect opportunity here to show the incompetence and bankruptcy of this administration, along with extracting results.

Schumer and Jeffery’s are working to do the opposite. Worthless.

When they shut the government down, there is still a huge pile of money to be dispersed. It just closes down some offices. Trump has stolen many billions from congressionally allocated uses. That money will pay the gestapo while everyone else eats ramen until the government reopens

Trump isn’t the type to pay people. He deliberately tries to renege on debts owed, just to feel like a brilliant deal artisan. He especially doesn’t care about poors nor military service members, which ICE somehow Venn Diagrams on top of the racism.

We’ll definitely agree to disagree, but I said what I said and your comment makes me feel no different.

In a time when Republicans should be in the hot seat, liberals (which I assume you are), are instead focusing on how shitty democrats are. In every post I see about what republicans are doing wrong, the first comment is to shit on Democrats.

This is how we give republicans the midterms.

liberals (which I assume you are)

Well you are clearly an idiot who doesn’t understand the definition of terms or have the remotest context for their comments.

The will for Democrats to meet Republicans halfway is precisely why Democrats lost this past elections.

You want to call meME?!? liberal? Bruh, you are literally advocating a liberal position. Get a clue. Don’t even bother showing up to the comments if you don’t know what words mean.

                Shitlibs gonna shitlib I guess.

Relax dude. I’m a real person.

I see now that you are a conservative who wants democrats to fail. I’ve have been seeing countless liberals on here that want the same thing. It’s hard to tell the difference these days.
