Everybody’s going bro this and bruh that, but you’re not my brother, dude 😒
It’s not like either word is new but I feel like “bro” and variations like bruh or brah have become way more commonly used in the last decade among younger people as a term of address in contexts where I would have just said dude
Bro is the singular form of Chat
(I have highschool age kids, trust me chat)
oh no
This is truly one of the comments of all time
Don’t like hearing that.
chat is like 100 year old slang for lice
This is, unfortunately, true
I just asked my kid what’s the plural of bruh, and they were like, I don’t know, ‘chat’ I guess?
I feel like “bro” is used far more than “dude” ever was.
Dude, bro. No.
Lol depends on the time period. Dude was huuuuge during the 80s and 90s.
Geography as well. Maybe dude was big in the USA. That just occurred to me.
Oh yeah, definitely.
I’m from the UK. We’ve said it for as long as I can remember, but mate is way more common.
Edit; amongst numerous others.
I have fond memories of my elementary school teacher in the 80’s (northeast US) getting absolutely enraged anytime someone in our class said Dude. And she would respond with “
A DUDE IS THE FIRST HAIR ON AN ELEPHANT’S ASS!” and we loved it.
I loved the show Hey, Dude as a kid
Same, but it’s all a blur, tbh.
Maybe it’s just because I have a child that will not stop using “bro”, but I agree. I don’t recall using “dude” in nearly this level of frequency, even as a huge fan of mutant turtles of the teenage variety.
Where do you live if you don’t mind me asking? Dude was a thing in the U.K., but not that much.
Yeah, since it is being used in a different way now. Bro used to be almost entirely aimed at the person you were talking to whereas dude was more general. Bro as an exclamation of disbelief/disappointment has also taken over from dude.
you can have a “certified bruh moment” with zero men involved.
Plenty of women have been called “dude” and called each other “dude” back in the day too.
This has always been one of the funniest things in my queer trans spaces. Some fem or enby folks absolutely do not want to be dude and some are insulted that you won’t dude them. It just depends on the person.
As it is with most things, try to tread lightly until you get a feel for the person and can ask them directly or hear directly how they’re okay being referred to. I try not to dude people unless I’m sure they’re okay with or want to be dude-ed
I feel dude has kind of taken on the role that “buddy” has/had. More negative, provoking even, sometimes also scolding. Meanwhile bro seems to be a tinge more affectionate. Idk that’s just how I perceive it
Misgendering potential aside, bro, dude, man, etc., all serve to normalize and reflect societies male-by-default viewpoint. Calling someone a feminine equivalent is seen as insulting and demeaning, or specific only to women. I love misogyny
Gotta normalize comrade 😎
my coworker calls everyone queen, which is preferable to the male-by-default viewpoint but also introduces monarchist titles which is a bummer
Also would make me uncomfortable tbh, queen has specific connotations that i dont like.
call everyone chica
“sis” as an equally gender neutral word alongside “dude”
Like Broseph Stalin, you are leading the way to the dictatorship of the broletariate. It is truly revbrolutionary. Like the Bro v. Wade of our generation. You brobliterate the enemy from the very peak of Mt. Brolympus. That’s some shit. That’s brolific. But that’s the kind of bro you are.
Sounds like a thought from Disco Elysium.
I am a proud dudebro. I’m taking that back from the scolds
Im a tactical dudebro.
Posting your everyday carry and it’s just a white claw and a zin tin
SHOUTING RELOAD as I replace my vape
Dude nuke incoming!
I just call my boys “babe”, then we make out, but it’s not gay cuz we’re totally thinking about HOT GIRLS when we do it.
I’m calling everyone ‘baby’ so it’s not misgendering but they are still spoken down to
I’d be OK with either. The youngins have taken to calling me “sir.”
yes pretty much
not of your a trans woman
several of my transfem friends say bro to eachother. shit’s a different part of speech or something

Get over it
if i had a nickel for every woman i’ve heard describe herself as “a silly little guy” i would have a bus fare.
also you should probably not use doritos for anything you’d use a plain tortilla chip for, because of all the shit on them. i’ll allow exceptions for those “taco in a bag” things people usually do with fritos, and if someone does a better job than taco bell of making a dorito taco shell.
Yeah I mean I wouldn’t use doritos first thing but they were talking about it like it’s the dumbest most outlandish shit they’ve ever seen done with food and like, idk, it would work in pretty much any instance where the chili lime flavor isn’t going to be overpowering and bad. There’s way worse food crimes than considering a flavored nacho usable as a nacho yknow
Next time you wanna shit talk me, tag me instead of being a coward

Yeah it’s frustrating. Don’t know if I’m being misgendered but generally I assume I am if a man is calling me bro
at least locally i’ve noticed it become totally gender neutral.
kind of like how “guys” is often used instead of the more neutral “ya’ll” or “comrades”
ah yes, masculinity assumed to be the default “gender neutral” option 🙃
trust me i wish i could call everyone “gals”
I’m not sure if bro would be much of an improvement 🤔
it’s not
Is “fellas” gendered? Honest question, not a native speaker
Yes
Fellas are males?!
(informal) A male person; a bloke, a chap, a guy, a man; also, preceded by a modifying word, sometimes with a sense of mild reproach: used as a familiar term of address to a man.
Fuck! I’ve been using it wrong for years then. What’s a good alternative? Mate is ungendered? I like mate
Here’s the first definition of the word fellow on wiktionary:
fellow (plural fellows)
(chiefly in the plural, also figuratively) A companion; a comrade.
Like fellow, mate isn’t inherently gendered, but in informal use it pretty much is. You wouldn’t typically address a woman as “mate” either
Fuck… So what’s a cool non-gendered word that I can use for plural? I thought fellas and mates were cool…
Shitheads
Fuckasses
Motherfuckers
Y’all, maybe
Yous sounds like, or maybe yas.
Yinz. And everyone will think you’re from northwestern Pennsylvania or the UP of Michigan
“Dont tase me bro” was when I felt like the word stopped being just a California beach bum thing and became everyone’s go-to term for a person they don’t know
“Bro, Where’s My Car” the new reboot of the franchise
I used alot of bro, brah, breh, bruh when working in my last workplace. For the longest time I was the only woman there so whenever shit hit the fan, which was always, I’d complain with a bruh variant.
