I would never vote for someone that claims jobs are necessary
So this is an example of the Lefty infighting we’re always lamenting.
But it just says you have the right to one, no?
When AI replace human workers, sure we don’t have to work. But in the current paradigm, everyone needs to work (except of course if one has disability that makes them impaired for full time work). Otherwise, don’t be a stereotype who support leftism just to find excuse not to work lol.
But you don’t understand, in 1992 the Democrats won the Presidency with like 40% of the vote on a message of “Republican but with less bigotry,” which proves that Americans love their basic economic message of “fuck you get your own food, shelter, and medical care!”
Damnit, I’ve been saying constructed opposition. I had the phrase wrong!
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)
he won four times. FOUR! they made a rule that you cant win more than twice because he never would have lost!
Some say he would still be president to this day without that rule.
honestly i had no idea that FDR was a Muslim.
Dude get this, a rightwing youtuber I follow that uncritically spouts rightwing vomit that I dutifully swallow and regurgitate for other incel babies told me the indigenous people of the US are secretly muslim!
This got me scared enough that I decided to just unquestionably believe it and now I am hiding in my lifted pickup watching Dirty Jobs on repeat to try to calm down, what should I do Grok?
A communist Muslim. You know, that famous combination.
That would make a lot of sense from what I’m being told
It really hurts the money politicians make in political contributions and perks.
My sick elderly family will be stricken to hear this
Just read his Address at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 31, 1936. The whole thing still feels very relevant and is a worthwhile (and not too long) read. The quote that stuck with me today was:
We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
We could use another FDR I think
If we got another FDR, I think I would have a heart attack from joy. Someone who will fucking fight for us. Jesus the bar is so low at this point.
FDR was a member of the ruling class (aristocracy really) and did those things because of a very real fear of socialist revolution given the relatively recent Russian revolution and the ongoing Great Depression.
If we want capitalists to give some ground to working class standard of living, it will be because they are afraid of losing the whole game
It wouldn’t matter as long as Congress, the courts, and the states remain as undemocratically corrupt as they are now. The US is cooked and isn’t going to get better. The best case scenario is that it falls apart and the states form new, sovereign entities. The fascists won’t just disappear, and they wont learn any lessons from the current administration or from reaping what they sow.
Short of massive, unprecedented, and devastating civil action, there is no hope.
Thanks for inspiring us all to do nothing.
We could use another FDR I think
It would have to be someone who might be wealthy enough not to care about where to get more campaign funding, but moral enough not to be greedy and silver-spooned.
It wasnt morality that made an oligarch promote social democracy. People forget FDR’s last name was Roosevelt.
He’d watched his predecessor send in the tanks to raze a camp of protesters infront of the capitol, and in the previous 20 years saw the Russian Revolution, a failed revolution in Germany, and being old-money, had a broader perspective on keeping his class on top than the short-sighted new money.
FDR wasnt embracing socialism, he was buying guillotine insurance to save capitalism.
His family were also drug lords.
This wikipedia link is about his maternal grandfather.
FDR did great things in office. He was also acting in self-interest.
In another universe, Henry Wallace wasn’t replaced by Truman as VP and thus Wallace became president upon FDRs death. That would have made a massive difference in our history.
Anyhow, for the edification of all…
A lot of people are dismissive of Roosevelt simply because he’s old money. Socialists dream that he should have gone further left. If he didn’t genuinely cared, business leaders would not have tried to coup him. I read somewhere that someone overheard a rich woman call FDR a class traitor. The Bretton Woods Agreement which he had drawn up did not invite any businesses for opinions. And it’s not groundbreaking to say that FDR wasn’t fully bringing America into socialism. All that shows FDR has only gone as far left as anyone could accept at the time.
My hope is for pritzker.
He’s be the perfect class traitor, but sadly, I don’t think he has enough dog in him to be what we need
Luigi.
I don’t know how I feel about how relevant 95% of that speech was.
“Oh, so you’re here to take my picture. Should I smile or someth–“
But hear me out, let’s just give the current racist fascists a chance first.
Blue no matter who, fr
Voting for the blue racist fascist is how we got here!
Turns out people who want racist fascists are going to vote republican anyway.
Trump’s votes barely increased but over 8 Million more people voted for Biden than Harris. We haven’t had more than 50 DNC in the senate for over 12 years.
Voting for the blue is demonstrably fucking not how we got here. Not voting blue is how we got here.
Voting blue when they give us dogshit policies that help nobody and politicians who do nothing to stop Republicans, when they arent just doing republican’s jobs for them is why the dems keep losing against the “make everything worse” party.
Look at the competition. Against that, america should be a 1 party state, instead we have dems going to war, funding ICE (clinton did not do this, because ICE did not exist), and kicking the shit out of the politically activated youth they need to get people to vote showing generation after generation that they are a dead end for positive social change.
I’ll paraphrase what someone on Lemmy said the other day:
Politics is like everyone on a bus voting for where we’re going to go for lunch.
If 5 people vote “Let’s drive off the cliff,” 4 people vote “Let’s go to McDonald’s,” and 3 people don’t vote because they hate McDonald’s, we all drive off the cliff and many of us die. You don’t get to not be on the bus.
Dogshit policies like Medicaid for all, removing money from politics (again), and taxing the rich.
Harris/Biden ran on opposing all of these. The Dems can’t simultaneously fight against Bernie and progressives and then pretend at some point they were fore them because Bernie was in a Dem primary at one point and forced Dem candidates to find deceptive ways to deflect and lie like Harris saying “access to healthcare for all”
They were literally positions listed on her campaign website.
I would link to it directly but its already unavailable so heres an Article about it. take specific notice of capital gains tax.
Policies they don’t actually support. If they did, they wouldnt let Manchin or Liberman or the parliamentarian or “norms” stop them. We’ve seen the dems can smash through barriers the same way Republicans can, they did it to illegally send weapons to Israel. We’ve seen they can whip votes and discipline their own party, they do it to any progressive who doesnt fall in line.
They’ve literally done these things whenever and to however much extent possible. You seem to think having permanently 50 or less senators overcomes the supermajority. It’s like you’re not even capable of parsing that information.
Watching Mamdani interview Trump voters in NYC really woke me. Tired of all the hateful takes on these people. They want politicians to listen and act and thought Trump would do that. No, they weren’t paying attention the first go-round, but Trump got their emotions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7FcVCYqQNs
If you really want to understand Trump voters, and what we need to do to get progressives in office, have a look:

True now as it was 8 years ago.
They want politicians to listen and act and thought Trump would do that. No, they weren’t paying attention the first go-round, but Trump got their emotions.
And yet after 4 years of Trump not actually doing jack or shit to help them, and promising to do worse the next time, they voted for his ass again. Voting on emotions and not on policy (on both sides of the isle) is exactly why we are where we are today and it’s not an excuse. People need to educate themselves. You want to remain ignorant and vote based on your feelings? Fine, but don’t call me hateful when I call you a moron. I’m not doing it to be mean, I’m doing it because you are a moron.
True now as it was 8 years ago.
“True”. Yeah. As someone born, raised, and currently living in a shit hole red state I can say that there is a grain of truth in that article, but homeboy misses the entire forest because he’s jerking off the trees. Let’s take a look at some of his claims.
We country folk are programmed to hate the prissy “elites”.
Absolutely that is a fact, let’s just ignore for a second that the vast majority of people in cities are struggling to survive just like they are and can hardly be described as ‘elites’ but ok. Who’s fault is their programming? Do ‘elites’ go around poor rural areas filling cracker minds up with how much they hate them or do their preachers, bosses and neighbors talk shit about ‘city folk’ because they are different and scary? They may get a little of column A by reading ‘big city’ newspapers or reading hot takes online, but they get a shit ton of column B shoved down their throats on the daily.
Blue islands in an ocean of red. The cities are less than 4 percent of the land mass, but 62 percent of the population and easily 99 percent of the popular culture. Our movies, shows, songs, and news all radiate out from those blue islands.
And if you live in the red, that fucking sucks.
Ok? The entertainment industry is a business just like any other, is anyone surprised they tend to focus on the 62% over the 38%? That wouldn’t make a hell of a lot of sense financially.
Also that 99% figure is an extreme amount of hyperbole. It might be 99% if you ignore the Billion+ dollar industry of folks singing about Shooting up Jukeboxes and how Sexy Tractors are, hell even Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Hootie, and Post Malone are making country albums. If you ignore hundreds of millions of Peckerwoods who get their ‘information’ from Fox “News”. If you ignore extremely popular right wing propaganda like Yellowstone and Landman and so on. There is plenty of content for ‘country folk’ to enjoy.
I never saw a family member, friend, or classmate be mean to the actual black people we had in town. We worked with them, played video games with them, waved to them when they passed. What I did hear was several million comments about how if you ever ventured into the city, winding up in the “wrong neighborhood” meant you’d get dragged from your car, raped, and burned alive. Looking back, I think the idea was that the local minorities were fine … as long as they acted exactly like us.
Oh well that’s all fine and cool then, It’s not racist if you wave to your local assimilated black person but talk about what savage murderers inner city blacks are.
The is a grain of truth in that if a black person living in such an area doesn’t act ‘too black’ or as was the case in my hometown if the one black family that was allowed to live there just so happened to have the star quarterback of the high school football team among it’s members, they are sometimes tolerated. These are the same enlightened people who told my mom that she had to kick my little sister out of the house because she had a mixed race baby and they ‘already had one group of blacks in town’, as if there was a quota.
Blacks riot, Muslims set bombs, gays spread AIDS, Mexican cartels behead children, atheists tear down Christmas trees. Meanwhile, those liberal Lena Dunhams in their $5,000-a-month apartments sip wine and say, “But those white Christians are the real problem!”
Holy shit, this sentence is exactly why I have no sympathy for good old fashioned country folk who refuse to pull their heads out of their asses. And yes once again there is a grain of truth here in that is exactly the attitude a lot of them have- but it also misses the point entirely.
Did he ever stop and wonder why the Black folks were rioting or actually give a single fuck about their reasons? No. Did he ever think that just maybe the U.S. Bombing Muslims for a century might have something to do with a couple of terrorists ‘setting bombs’? Did he ever blame all white people or all Christians for the more frequent acts of Terrorism perpetrated by White folks and ‘Christians’? Clearly not. Did he ignore every single news station in the 80’s and 90’s emphasizing the fact that AIDS was NOT a ‘gay disease’ and straight people spread AIDS even more than gay people? Apparently he did. Mexican cartels ‘behead children’, not like the kinder and gentler ‘white’ gangsters who just leave horse heads in your bed, fit you with concrete shoes and put a bullet in the center of your forehead. Did he ever stop and listen to the reasons that liberals gave for why White Christians were a problem? I mean, it’s not like Christians have ever done anything wrong like sexually assault their congregations, treat women as second class citizens, vote in politicians who sucked up to them but were actively making life worse for everyone, including them.
Don’t message me saying all those things I listed are wrong. I know they’re wrong. Or rather, I think they’re wrong, because I now live in a blue county and work for a blue industry.
Sure Jason, don’t strain yourself by actually thinking about whether something is right or wrong, just follow along side with whatever the people around you think. It’s much easier than having an actual opinion.
Try telling that to anybody who lives in Trump country.
They’re getting the shit kicked out of them. I know, I was there.
AND. WHO’S. FUCKING. FAULT. IS. THAT?!? Is it the “Liberal Elites” you have spent the entire article trashing, or is it maybe, JUST MAYBE the fucking politicians they vote for that cut funding for the social safety nets that would help the poorest among you keep their heads above water. Who vote to raise taxes on the poorest Americans so they can give tax breaks to the rich? Who vote to cut funding for education when we already lag far behind the rest of the world in that department? Who vote to ban books and whitewash history, keeping people ignorant of the past and doomed to repeat it? Who have kept the minimum wage at the same abysmal rate for the last 16 years? A minimum wage with half of the purchasing power it had in 1968 when America was supposedly ‘great’?
But no. Ignore reality. Ignore your best interest. Ignore the fact that it’s you who voted in a literal fascist dictator who wipes his ass with the constitution. Blame 'liberal’s for “being mean” to you, and then expect me to have sympathy for that.
Get all of the way the fuck out of here with that bullshit.
Assholes Are Heroes
Yes, by all means. Prop up a literal Billionaire who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Who went to Ivy League schools. Who has never worked a day in his motherfucking life. Who has never once even went to a grocery store to do his own shopping. Who has had everything handed to him his whole life. Who is as Christian as Aleister Crowley. A man who is every single bit the ‘elite city folk’ that you just spent so much time trashing, who shares literally none of the values you spent so much time explaining. All because he is a fucking dickhead and hates the same people you do. Don’t stop and ask yourself if someone like that could possibly know or care about what it’s like to be a poor working class person. Don’t think about why he might be fighting against the very people who have been trying to help you. Just grab another chaw and grin while the leopard eats your face, and then whine on social media about how this wasn’t what you voted for.
It feels good to dismiss people, to mock them, to write them off as deplorables.
No actually it doesn’t feel good at all. You know what would actually feel really good? If they pulled their heads out of their motherfucking asses and paid attention for once in their life as if their actions mattered. That would feel amazing.
But you might as well take time to try to understand them.
Once more in case you missed it, I was born in Red Country. I was raised here. My family are mostly Trumpers. I understand them all too well, and I can tell you that the criticisms are 100% correct. They are a bunch of ignorant, racist assholes who don’t want to listen to anyone who looks different from them, and that is exactly the problem.
They’re also brainwashed religious fanatics.
Yup. From the outside, it’s been reasonably obvious since 2007: The current system isn’t working, and the ones who offer to change things are the ones who will actually get the votes.
This became even more apparent post-covid: Biden offered a return to normalcy, while Trump wanted to “fix everything”. You can say what you want about Trump (and I will probably agree with most of it), but he offered something else than the same old neolib system that has failed more and more people every year.
The problem with today’s mainstream politicians is that one side tries to return to Obama era “middle ground” policies while the other side can be summed up by this shamelessly stolen comic:
A sensible politician who wants to win an election needs to understand that “the middle ground” no longer means not stepping on toes. The middle ground these days means shaking up the current system to provide basic necessities for those who have been ignored for decades. People turn fascist for the same reason people turn tankie; when you’re starving and someone promises all the potatoes you can drink, of course that sounds better than the current situation.
I truly hope Mamdani or someone like him gets to appear as more than “ermagerd scary communist” to the right side, because I’m sure most of those who would insta-hate “The left” actually can get behind a lot of the actual policies once they get beyond the politics.
I’m all for rainbow-rights, eco-friendly living, and diversity, but most peoples priorities are a lot more immediate: putting food in the table. Let’s all hope the DNC realizes this.
Was working for hardcore Southern Baptists several years back. They admitted they liked Bernie’s words. Also, they hated George Bush. I’m certain they hate Trump with every fiber of their soul, but they’re brainwashed into hating “socialism”. Smart men! Just can’t get past “liberal bad”.
Tired of all the hateful takes on these people. They want politicians to listen and act and thought Trump would do that. No, they weren’t paying attention the first go-round, but Trump got their emotions.
Sure, I got that the first go around. It was the second time that cemented things for me. Nobody was ignorant of who and what Trump was in 2024. Those are the people I think are hateful bigots willing to burn down the entire country if only it’ll take a few undesirables out with them.
In other words, the other major Trump constituency (aside from conservatives obviously) is gullible people who got swindled.
That wasn’t really a revelation to me and, while I do have some pity for those people, I also think they deserve every bit of hate they get for fucking up so badly that they’ve destroyed the whole country. We are suffering the consequences of their laziness and stupidity, and that almost pisses me off even more than the fuckwads who voted for fascism on purpose.
Also, 1:10 in the video:
There were young voters who didn’t vote for her [Kamala Harris] because of the genocide, and I wouldn’t have voted for her if I did, but I did vote for her, obviously, because I have common sense."
😆😆😆
Remember how FDR got reelected so many times they amended the constitution after he died to keep presidents to two terms?
!remindmebot@lemmy.world 4 years “Trump 3rd term.”
If democrats are successful and get consistently elected, then that means they have to actually do something and run on a platform beyond “I’m not Republican” to not get primaried.
Establishment Dems hate success and progress. Progressives are doing good.
Only corrupt people who are willing to “play ball” for the rich get into office. Trump is part of the service economy for the rich (the Dempublican kingmakers).
They won’t interrupt their bosses when they’re having a good time.
Am Democrat
Am not terrified
All criticisms of said Democrat I have seen are of his opinion on Israel, which also differ from the example here.
Democratic leaders are largely useless, if not outright cowards, cheats, and/or frauds*
There, FTFY.
You forgot spineless, which I would say is distinct from cowards. But yes, It’s much more accurate now.
Political parties don’t cater to people who don’t vote
The Democrats actively contribute to non-voting by being the only space for opposition, but then always campaigning on being “polite Republicans that fill out paperwork”
And in the USA you vote with your
walletoffshore bank account. You don’t have the right to complain until you’ve voted with at least 6 figures.Or people who do, if they dont give money.
