Paulo Freire, born on the 19th of September in 1921, was a Brazilian philosopher and radical pedagogue most known for his 1968 work Pedagogy of the Oppressed. “Language is never neutral.”

Paulo was born in Recife, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Initially affluent, his family experienced hardship during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Freire’s education suffered due to his own experiences with poverty and hunger.

Freire began working as a schoolteacher in the 1940s, beginning to serve as the director of the Pernambuco Department of Education and Culture in 1946. Due to the 1964 Brazilian coup d’état, where a military dictatorship was put in place with the support of the United States, Paulo Freire was exiled from his home country, an exile that lasted 16 years.

Freire then worked in Chile, until April 1969 when he accepted a temporary position at Harvard University. It was during this period, in 1968, that Freire published his most famous work, “Pedagogy of the Oppressed”.

In this text, Freire criticizes what he calls the “banking method” of education, wherein a teacher “deposits” knowledge into an empty vessel, the student, or “bank”. Instead, Freire calls upon teacher to engage in a more dialog-centric or creative education, one in which the suppressed experiences of the oppressed help create knowledge, fostering a social reality in which the marginalized are humanized.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed has since become the third most cited book in the social sciences, according to Elliott D. Green. As of 2000, the book had sold over 750,000 copies worldwide.

“Manipulation, sloganizing, depositing, regimentation, and prescription cannot be components of revolutionary praxis, precisely because they are the components of the praxis of domination.”

Paulo Freire

I really need to finally get off Reddit, Trueanon is the only decent community left on the site. Even the self-described “leftist” meme subreddits like 196 and CuratedTumblr writhe and scream “tankie!” the instant they even get a sniff of any real class consciousness. Don’t even get me started when actual revolutionary ML leaders like Lenin and Mao are mentioned, hoo boy. I forget how deep liberalism is ingrained into the American psyche from the moment we’re born.

196 was always off for me and curratedtumblr I spent so much time arguing against people who want a little imperialism as a treat there. After deprogrammed got banned I mostly use it for meme subreddit and some fandom ones

Yeah, I’ve been trying to fill the shitposting void that r/cth left in my soul for years now, and now I’m realizing that thinking I could find it on Reddit was a fool’s errand. Kind of annoying that there’s no suitable alternative for 99.9% of niche hobby subs, but it is what it is.

196 definitely was always a little weird, their trans acceptance has felt kinda chaser-ey as long as I used it, but it was still the most inclusive dedicated meme subreddit that wasn’t straight up leftist memes afaik (which evidently isn’t saying much). Liberals calling themselves “leftists” while still defending the imperial core does sound right on the money for CurratedTumblr too.

It’s the nature of reddit that that place will never be so based if it flies too close to the sun it is either killed sometimes the fear of it being killed will mean self policing. I get it people want their own little space online especially on one of the only platforms nowadays. Something something the master’s tools honestly real glad for hexbear even if there’s only so many people here

I still use reddit but mostly just for hobby subs. They still have /r/communismmemes at least. There’s /r/latestagecapitalism but I got temp banned for suggesting DSA is a leftist org but they allow green party discussions to flourish every election cycle. It’s kind of a mess so I just stick to lukewarm comments here and there.

That’s pretty much where I’m at, using it for hobby subs and tolerable meme subreddits when I need something to scroll. Sadly I don’t think there will be an active community dedicated to the MTG Modern format on Lemmy for a long time, but even so recent attitudes on the site have made it pretty evident that it should definitely be a smaller part of my media diet.
