On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

Whats has been your favorite post/event from last year (july 2023-july 2024)?

I wont lie, all the fedidrama has been fun to read, especially when libs wander here

Megathreads and spaces to hang out:

reminders:

  • 💚 You nerds can join specific comms to see posts about all sorts of topics
  • 💙 Hexbear’s algorithm prioritizes comments over upbears
  • 💜 Sorting by new you nerd

Element is a messaging app that lets you talk to people over the Matrix protocol.

To get started, check out this link, where you can choose to either download Element for your platform or, if on a computer, open it in a browser.

The instructions that follow are for the desktop application and the web application, but the process is similar on all apps:

    Press “Create Account”

We host our own Matrix server, so if you want you can change matrix.org to chapo.chat.

This is completely optional; users who sign up with a matrix.org username can still talk to people with chapo.chat username.

(Note: It is chapo.chat, not hexbear.net. Also, registrations aren’t always open on chapo.chat; if they’re not, just create an account on matrix.org)

Fill in a username and password

I think I accidentally made Fallout 4’s story better (admittedly not hard) with my alternative start. I did an escaped Synth. I made them the default looking female character and called them Nora. That said I have changed my hair, tattoos, scars etc during the game.

When I eventually got around the main quest, I find the body of Nora with the same recorded voice and features as my character dead in Vault 111. Kellog mistakes me for the dead Nora. I see her alive in his memories. Codsworth thinks I’m the old Nora. There’s obviously cracks in the mod and dialogue where things become janky.

But the whole thing has become murky and ambiguous. Is my character a Synth? Does my character know that? Does the Institute Know this? Does Shaun know I’m the original or a Synth copy?

Given I’m Railroad and I’m infiltrating the Institue our dialogue suddenly becomes a game of intrigue. I’m trying to butter him up so I can work to sabotage them. Is he observing me as an experiment in turn or is it a weird dying man’s attempt to resurrect his mother?

At a family function right now, this side of the family has NO idea of my politics because they’re hyper reactionary and a little dangerous, so I just pretend to be completely aloof from politics.

Two particularly religious nutty family members were right next to me talking about the end times and if they think Jesus will be coming soon, and if Kamala and the dems are the antichrist. One let out “do you think we’ll have full communism before then”. And I just had to step away and laugh in the bathroom. Americans are so incredibly brainstormed.

I believe in myself and I trust myself. I feel secure in my ability to get through tough times, listen, and make changes when I need to. I am smart and adaptable. I care for others and for myself. The things I like and the things I do are worthwhile.
