The local humane society, Marin Humane, confirmed to ABC News that there have been attacks from a wild squirrel in the area that may be the result of public feeding.
“This behavior is unusual for squirrels and is likely the result of someone feeding it … When wildlife is fed by humans, they can lose their natural fear and act more emboldened. This is why we remind people that feeding wildlife can have negative consequences - for both people and the animals”
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agrees that feeding wild animals is destructive, as it may cause them to react negatively when they are not fed
Sad fact, there’s a good chance Animal Control will eventually catch and euthanize this squirrel because when wild animals are sending humans to the hospital that ends up being the go to solution. Unless there’s some wildlife sanctuary it can go to instead and maybe thrive in, but even that’s questionable because it’s been socialized to be used to humans.
Which is why taming or socializing wild animals is irresponsible and is actually not the best way to show love and solidarity to them, even though they’re extremely cute so we naturally want to be friends with them. I want to frolic like a disney princess with all my wild animal friends too, but not if it’s going to get them killed.
