How much and how hard are the Dems gonna drag their feet and sabotage their own candidate/support lib independent runs?
Too early to tell. My gut reaction was that they’re going to behave like Labour did to Corbyn and actively sabotage his campaign behind the scenes.
On the other hand, they were able to absorb AOC into their party machinery, so they might think they can do the same to Zohran.
I hope bro has thick skin and sound principles.
behave like Labour did to Corbyn
It’s a bit different in the US because the campaigns have their own infrastructure mostly. I’m not sure if Zoran really needs to use any shared Democratic Party campaigning infrastructure. The parties aren’t really traditional political parties like they are in the UK.
So even though Democrats are going to try to sabotage him, it isn’t like they’ll be able to do it from inside his campaign.
Both Cuomo and Adams have already announced their intention to commit political murder-suicide by disregarding the results of their own Democratic party primary election and running as independents. Adams was so embarrassed by the idea of losing the primary that he even withdrew his name from the ballot last minute.
Im not an American but couldnt that play into Zohrans favour if Cuomo and Adams basically split the conservative vote ?
All three are Democrats. There is still the Republican candidate in the general. In the 2021 election, the Republican got 28% and Democrat Adams got 67%. If Adams and Cuomo as independents split Mamdani’s vote, like 25%/22%/20%, that would be enough for Republican to win. Or maybe Republican voters will vote cross-party-lines for Cuomo just to see Mamdani lose.
EDIT: Come to think of it, you are right that if Cuomo and Adams both appeal to the same conservative part of the Democratic party, then it may be better if Adams does continue to run as independent in the general and splits Cuomo’s vote. If Mamdani gets 55% of the 67% Democratic voters, and Cuomo and Adams split remaining 45%, then Cuomo can’t win even if half of 28% Republicans switch their vote for him.
Thanks for the information. Im not American but I have relatives that live in New York which is why I keep a closer eye on the political situation of the city.
The word last night was that Cuomo was weighing an independent bid based on how close the primary results were. If they were close and he lost, he’d run in the general. However, what the talking heads said is their sources are indicating it’s not going to be close enough. Which makes sense given how quickly Cuomo conceded; that suggests their internal polling was showing Cuomo without a path to victory in ranked choice.
Isn’t the Mayor of NYC one of those elections where the winner of the Democratic Party basically wins the general? Zohran will probably be mayor, but the Democrats will definitely ratfuck him in office.
NYC is heavily democrat, but they used to love electing republican mayors, particularly if the suburbanites get scared about “crime” or terrorism. Remember that they had both Rudy Gulliani (back when his brain kind of worked) and Mike Bloomberg (back when he was a republican) within the past couple of decades.
