Yesterday and the day before I was intimidated by (lemmy /kbin / the fediverse) today Im already more comfortable. Anyone feeling the same, I advice to just mess around commenting and posting, people in here are nice, you’ll get the hang of it if you try.
Haven’t gone on reddit since the blackout and probably won’t go back.
Hope more of us join, so far its been fun.
Although some of the communities I liked to browse on reddit are not yet here, its helping me expand and diversify a bit on the content I usually read, so I ain’t complaining.
It’s a bit rough on Jerboa but I’d suspect a few more updates and it’ll be better. I’ve not used it on a mobile browser much. It’s growing. I just hope it can get to the point where there is useful daily dialog happening before the refugees move to another camp.
I like the Jerboa app but it is still early in it’s feature development. Try “installing” or “adding to homepage” your Lemmy instance directly from your mobile browser. At least until Jerboa catches up with the usability of the mobile site, I personally have been really enjoying this little compromise.
I’m here and planning to stick with it even though there’s room for improvement. Neither lemmy nor kbin were really ready for this much attention, but that’s not their fault. And they are a lot better than nothing. I think fediverse principles and flexibility seem like a better fit for the core values of S76 as a company and Pop OS as a project.
To be perfectly honest, while the growth and inclusiveness is welcome, the thing I like best about it is the phase the fledgling community is with regards to civility and more thoughtful discussion. It’s great to see how engaged the S76 staff are here, but also how everyone here is looking for that breath of fresh air. I’m sure there will be issues later on with the growth, but for now I’m just trying to enjoy this.
I honestly have to credit the /r/pop_os/ sub for directing me here while the blackouts were in full effect. Lemmy and the Fediverse are turning out to be just the place we’ve all been looking for. Decentralized servers, different viewpoint acceptance, multiple alternatives to instances, and a warm welcome. Ruud is putting a lot of effort into this and it shows. The admins for lemmy.world have also made a great initial impression.
I know it’s early days, and this wasn’t exactly something that could be planned for, but have you considered whether this community should be on a separate lemmy instance? What I mean is, it looks like the main motivation to reopen r/pop_os is to keep that content publicly available. But it shows the conflict of having that content on a platform that’s not controlled by the Pop project, or its users, or S76. So far I don’t imagine a conflict with the lemmy.world admin, but can that be guaranteed? Is there (at least planned) functionality for a whole community to move from one lemmy instance to another?
The lemmy.world maintainer has a lot of experience hosting instances for Mastodon, and lemmy.world currently has the best hardware, highest uptime, and now the highest population count compared to other instances.
As for the platform, i like the inline commenting, but I miss markdown. Also, it keeps the interface in Greek(??). I do have Greek installed as a secondary keyboard layout for all my physics/maths typing, but having a Greek interface (which I have to change everytime from “Browser’s default” to English, is weird.
How does everyone from Reddit feel about the lemmy experience?
As of this moment, there are currently:
It’ll take time, and most importantly content, to entice migration.

The number of communities are a lot smaller for sure. But the ones I need are here; i.e. Iinux gaming, popos, anime, hentai.
Still dont 100% understand everything about this site or sites but I have some of the communities I interacted with so I’m pretty happy

Right now I feel lost, but I’m sure that will pass. I figured out Usenet thirty years ago, I can do the same here.
The sense of community I had on the linux subreddits will be harder to achieve I think.

What other instance would you recommend?
I meant have you considered hosting your own instance? It would be an additional level of control, which may or may not be worth the trouble.
Content! That’s the key.

I see 452 followers here, but I’m not sure if they’re all from mastodon. https://fosstodon.org/@pop_os@lemmy.world

You forgot people from lemmy.cA
Great, except the lack of moderation tools is a serious problem.
