In a joint interview with the Financial Times, Ola Källenius, head of European car industry body Acea and the chief executive of Mercedes-Benz, also warned that the European Commission would be making “a catastrophic mistake” if the automotive market shrank further as a result of forcing the industry to sell only EVs.
Europe: no thanks
if the automotive market shrank further as a result of forcing the industry to sell only EVs.
I am not sure why the market volume is supposed to shrink when only selling EVs. We have still the same amount of people in Europe, who barring any major and continued investments into public infrastructure still need the same amount of cars.
I guess the idea is that people buy new cars more often than they need to, but with EV being more expensive more people will wait longer before replacing their car. Which doesn’t seem horrible to me.
I’m really unsure why European cars don’t fly of the dealer lots. They have expensive red SUVs, expensive white SUVs, expensive grey SUVs, expensive black SUVs. What else could the customer want?
I’m currently the owner of a mid-price non-suv European car. They’re pretty common.
Weird, car makers currently have problems getting all their cars sold despite combustion engines being available.
Seems like the demand just isn’t there.“a catastrophic mistake” if the automotive market shrank further as a result of forcing the industry to sell only EVs
Sounds odd. Will there suddenly be less demand for cars if they don’t burn fossil fuels? Will this cause people who commute several hours to work to suddenly switch to bikes, or to move closer to work?
Surely the demand for cars is more influenced by the housing market and public transportation infrastructure than by what motor the car uses. There is no demand for shitty expensive hybrids and cars with 1.2l, 3 cylinder turbo engines.
Electric infrastructure is simply bad. Good luck going on a trip during season. And those cars are also expensive.
I am continuously unimpressed by things Ola says… Dieter Zetsche wouldn’t have made such dumb statements and decisions.
I love the choice of satanic red as background color for the thumbnail
