i honestly find it pretty uncommon to find a democratic socialist who isnt actually just a social democrat, so i can see where the “democratic socialists dont want to end capitalism” perception could come from— 98% of people in america identifying as democratic socialists say they just want to regulate capitalism and have “the nordic model”. nevermind that the nordic model’s downfall has and will be that you cant regulate capitalism to be fair since capital is power and capitalists will ALWAYS find a way to use that power to control society

Denmark with its dying welfare state and Sweden with its 20+% youth unemployment rate are truly examples to strive for.

americans don’t understand this. they don’t understand that the capitalists in denmark and sweden spend every second of their days trying to find ways to chip away at the social safety net and steal that money for themselves, and since the creation of these welfare states that has been the dominant struggle in the nordic countries. of course that struggle is obfuscated by those very same capitalists and it gets turned into “immigrants are the reason your pension is less, not me who stole it from you”

a struggle that only existed because of proximity to the USSR, and a struggle that after 30 years of 1000 cuts is nearing its predictable end

Democratic socialism isnt a thing outside america (most other countries call them socdems) and even name itself betrays its rotten foundations - it calls into existence a „undemocratic“ socialism and implicitly signals its allegiance to „democracy“ aka capitalism. Don’t forget democracy is codeword for capitalism.

US ‘democratic socialists’ are more like feckless Euro electoral socialists, which we could also call social democrats if we wana be spicy but the US lacks the political sophistication for these tendencies to be formally separated
