Building implosion

In the controlled demolition industry, building implosion is the strategic placing of explosive material and timing of its detonation so that a structure collapses on itself in a matter of seconds, minimizing the physical damage to its immediate surroundings. Despite its terminology, building implosion also includes the controlled demolition of other structures, like bridges, smokestacks, towers, and tunnels. This is typically done to save time and money of what would otherwise be an extensive demolition process with construction equipment, as well as to reduce construction workers exposure to infrastructure that is in severe disrepair.

Building implosion, which reduces to seconds a process which could take months or years to achieve by other methods, typically occurs in urban areas[citation needed] and often involves large landmark structures.

The actual use of the term “implosion” to refer to the destruction of a building is a misnomer. This had been stated of the destruction of 1515 Tower in West Palm Beach, Florida. "What happens is, you use explosive materials in critical structural connections to allow gravity to bring it down.

The term “implosion” was coined by my grandmother back in, I guess, the '60s. It’s a more descriptive way to explain what we do than “explosion”. There are a series of small explosions, but the building itself isn’t erupting outward. It’s actually being pulled in on top of itself. What we’re really doing is removing specific support columns within the structure and then cajoling the building in one direction or another, or straight down.

  • Stacy Loizeaux, NOVA, December 1996

Building implosion techniques do not rely on the difference between internal and external pressure to collapse a structure. Instead, the goal is to induce a progressive collapse by weakening or removing critical supports; therefore, the building can no longer withstand gravity loads and will fail under its own weight

Numerous small explosives, strategically placed within the structure, are used to catalyze the collapse. Nitroglycerin, dynamite, or other explosives are used to shatter reinforced concrete supports. Linear shaped charges are used to sever steel supports. These explosives are progressively detonated on supports throughout the structure. Then, explosives on the lower floors initiate the controlled collapse.

A simple structure like a chimney can be prepared for demolition in less than a day. Larger or more complex structures can take up to six months of preparation to remove internal walls and wrap columns with fabric and fencing before firing the explosives.

still looking for a job. mostly junior python dev or a fucking linux sysadmin. i wish i had a job where i can slack off and play video games and talk to you all.

i genuinely have dark thoughts these days. my classmate at uni didn’t sign up for master’s degree because he wanted to take a break from it. why can’t i have that luxury. my family is just forcing me and i wish i have a job where i move out and live with my folks and fuck around and maybe learn robotics cause that’s the coolest thing ever. maybe even go to therapy. i fucking need therapy after a quarter of my life just being constant hell

my family consists of workaholics and grifters. i am the only normal one at this point. they think i am brainwashed or lazy or fucking stupid, but they are trying to put the giant square peg in the needle-sized hole.

i have today and then tomorrow, then monday will be my free time. i should just constantly browse linkedin and shit. i need tips on getting either python jr dev or linux sysadmin (mostly sysadmin). my best friend who hosts my matrix homeserver of choice says that i know more linux than programming which is why i want to be a sysadmin so bad (also 7k dollars a month who the fuck says no to that)

btw, to the person who asked me if i’d press the button that makes me vanish from existence… terminalencounter, was it? where’s the fucking button? please i need it now

I’m calling it now (although probably others have too) the way they have covered Charlie Kirk everywhere, constantly, and as opposed to the school shooting that happened that very same day will lead to more assassinations.

Potential shooters will see UnitedHealth CEO’s death and Kirk’s and realize they will get far more bang for their buck killing these figures than some random kids and people.

Experiencing a great bean-trayal tonight. I put some beans on slow cook in my instant pot for 6.5 hours before I went out expecting delicious post-club beanis. I came home and the beans were tough’n’toothsome. Thankfully I was busting it down slow style in my instant pot so I can crank it up now but I was really hoping for a pre-bed-beaning.

angry rant that doesn't matter whatever

I have come to really hate most youtube video essayists. It’s such an obnoxious form of criticism, from people whose level of insight is usually far more shallow than they think it is. Just saw one in my feed called “Why Tolkien ‘intensely disliked’ Dune,” and I feel like I know exactly what it will say- it will probably compare the moral outlooks of the two works and talk about Tolkien’s Catholicism and moral optimism versus Herbert’s cynical whatever the fuck- and that it will piss me off. Tolkien probably just hated Dune because the prose sucked, but there’s no way to make a video essay about that.
