I know we’re small, but would there be enough people here interested in committing to a book club or maybe just a movie or show watching group? The book club could maybe be for short stories to start, or less than one book a month. Something manageable and low pressure. A movie or tv group would be one movie a month. I have a lot on my lists that I don’t have a lot of irl friends interested in. Would love to have a place to chat about that media with women who have also experienced the media. I could take this to book communities, but I’d like to increase my consumption of media related to women so I feel like there might be some natural interest here.
Amazing!
I’m thinking anything related to the female experience. Whether it stars women, is written by women, directed by women, or just about men’s interactions with women.
For books I think I’d like to start with some Ursula K le Guin short stories. I want to make sure there’s enough people willing to read a short story that it could potentially translate into actual books. I don’t want to choose a book and then just me and one other person read it or something. I’d feel bad I got them excited for nothing. I feel like le guins work is so universal that the genre won’t be a problem and she is so seminal that I hope even if the genre is off putting people will be willing to overlook it.
For shows, probably not a show like Breaking Bad, even though there’s technically a marriage involved, since it stars men and is written and directed mostly by men, but shows like Good Girls and Wednesday (starring women), or You (about women and based on books written by a woman), or the Matrix (from the Wachowski sisters). Lots of options really.
Oooh! Ursula is a fantastic pick and my personal favorite author. Even if we decide on something that’s a re-read for me from her I’d call it a good problem. And if not, all the better!
What I had in terms of serious movies was “Women Talking”, which is an entire cast of women and a single man who barely speaks. Set in an amish community where the women have been systematically drugged and SA’d. Tragically based off real events, but a fantastic film. Given the subject matter I wouldn’t blame anyone who would pass on it but it is one that prompts a lot of discussion.
Love that suggestion!
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas could be a good starting short story from le Guin.
I’ve been working my way through Lena Dunham’s Girls and recently also finished Too Much in case anyone wants to talk about those 😝
I would be into that. I’ve only read two of her books but loved them both.
Here is the post for the first month 🎉: https://lemmus.org/post/16011446
Definitely one of her most popular, and for good reason!
I’ll replay again once I get the official thread up!
