why the hell did hotel staff have their passports? I feel like we’re always taught to keep our passports in a safe place and not to let someone else take it (unless they’re inspecting it). Like this is the kind of thing that human traffickers do.
WTF. Why?! If someone asked to keep my passport I would be expecting an abduction van to roll up at any point. What reason could they have to take your passport?
In Cuba, the “casa particular” hosts would just check the passport and log it in their logbook (Cuban govt. requirement). Which I guess is the same thing. Weird that they would do it for any extended period of time though. But maybe it just takes too much time and there’s to many to do it immediately on check-in.

Exactly. These tourists may as well walked around wearing shirts that said “traffic me”. You don’t just give your passport to people.
A lot of hotels in Europe hold your passport when you check in.

Yeah I’ve stayed in those. In China they just photograph the passport
