    No! This is where it started. The first targets of European genocide of the indigenous Americans were those who encountered Columbus, and those who weren’t outright slaughtered or died to disease were worked to death. He depopulated Hispaniola so they had to bring in slaves from abroad because they ran out of people. (Well, Nicolás de Ovando handled the majority of that. But it was a process started by Columbus)

    Columbus was monstrous by Spanish standards. Francisco de Bobadilla saw what he had done to the indigenous populations and the Spanish who had objected, and had him shackled.
