Just like that meme, it’s the last place you can go hang out that doesn’t cost any money.
Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy (movie streaming) etc are great resources my library offers and for being free they are really good
I started those services a few years ago I’ve read more than I have in a long time. It feels way healthier than scrolling forever when I’m bored at work
Yes Audiobooks Streaming, Ebook rentals, and Movie Streaming are all valid uses that show up as funding for your local library.
Some also loan out tools and other hardware and give free classes on all sorts of shit.
My small town library has educational toys that can be checked out for kids. They also have little audiobook players that are basically a minimal MP3 player preloaded with a given audiobook so no other hardware required. And of course tons of CDs and movies and magazines and books
Just borrowed City of Lost Children on BluRay. Cost nothing.
I feel like the sort of people that want to close libraries, want to close libraries because people use them.
Or because they’re afraid that people will start using them!
Some “i am very intelligent” types think they are a waste of resources since the internet exists, and everyone can just pay a monthly fee to access all the data they need.
Yet the trillions wasted on defense structure and the prison system is totally fine yep yep no problem. Its the evil libraries.
I don’t think I even have the right information they want unless they’re lenient (like accepting a very old school ID for photo ID).
You can always stop in and ask, and if not you can look at stuff while there without checking anything out. My local library is half a block from the mechanic I usually go to so I’ll often wander over while my tires are being rotated and find some coffee table book to thumb through for 20 minutes
Regarding ID they often just need proof of residence, which can simply be a utility bill in your name or they might even accept junk mail that’s addressed to you
I got mine online without an ID
I looked at my closest library’s website, online-only lasts for 90 days. For a full card it states
proof of residency
orA form of identification that has your current , permanent address on it
as a requirement (of which I don’t have the listed examples).Although I also depend on the weather being nice (it has been hot lately) to ride my bike to the town the library is in, so not too keen on the idea of needing to return stuff anyway.
As someone who’s kinda getting into reading but doesn’t yet know what authors I like, the library is a really good place to just try out books that look interesting without spending a shitton.
Right now I’m reading a book called the Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson which is a really neat alternate history book about automotons. I literally just grabbed it off the shelf at the library based on the font choice and I’m really enjoying it so far
