Don’t feel bad, “chum”, as an illocutionary act it works. It’s kind of like how you can say “what’s up?” and the other person says “how’s it going?” and neither answers the question, bc at the illocutionary level you’re just saying “hi”.
I feel vindicated by this, no more shall I have flashbacks of raising my hand in class to say “can I go to the toilet” only to get a smug reply back from the teacher
