Summary

Three people died in ICE custody in April, bringing the total deaths under Trump’s current term to at least seven. Victims include Brayan Garzón-Rayo, Nhon Nguc Nguyen, and Marie Ange Blaise, whose case raised questions about denied medical care.

ICE faces criticism over overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and lack of oversight as detainee numbers near 50,000.

Advocates cite systemic neglect and worsening conditions amid Trump’s aggressive deportation campaign.

Human rights groups filed lawsuits over DHS office closures, and hunger strikes, protests, and investigations continue nationwide as detainees report abuse and deteriorating mental health care.

I am struggling to get my fellow Americans to understand that in WW2, we built concentration camps for Japanese people and were detaining them in these numbers. Everyone just wistfully calls them “internment camps.”

I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with this culture but we are just perennially unable to recognize things for what they are. It’s like we have this built-in need to be lied to. If the government doesn’t do it, we brew up our own homemade lies.

“Concentration camp” evokes the Nazi style death camps. The USA’s version of this was/is decidedly less about mass extermination of a race. Still a concentration camp, still repugnant. I think the terminology is loaded and it makes it harder for people to understand. Not to mention the dearth of education we have which certainly isn’t helping…

Given that Trump has fired several immigrants judges (hard to get a good number but at least 20 it seems) since the start of his term he actually doesn’t care about processing cases as quickly as possible. Cruelty is the point. They’re hoping people will “self-deport” out of fear.
