Strange. I don’t consistently use it myself (I’m more a Lemmy type person), but it always worked pretty okay in my testing. I tried it again just now, and I was able to respond to someone and visit my profile without issue. Perhaps there is an issue with your friendica instance? I did my testing on friendica.world.
I’m using the older 3.1 version from f-droid, so maybe there was a regression in the 4.0 release as well, if you’re using that.
Regarding mobile apps, Raccoon for Friendica is a pretty polished and nice app, and it also works for mastodon accounts too.
Wait, is that an actual line from the show?
It was a travesty that pensions were largely replaced with 401ks in the 80’s in the US (curious if a similar thing happened elsewhere in the world), effectively forcing participation in the stock market to have any chance at retirement.
They found another way to shore up the continuation and capitulation to capitalism while boosting their share prices at the sane time.
What an absolute con.
I feel like more people using smaller instances is a good thing, as it helps them become one of those desirable instances, and helps keep the Admins of those small instances motivated to maintain their instance (since they see their efforts being rewarded).
I do get that a bigger instance provides a smoother experience out of the box, but with Lemmy Federate and Lemmyverse search, I feel like it’s easier to overcome a small instance limitation on lemmy compared to a small mastodon instance.
That’s just my two cents though.
I went outside of my usual wheelhouse and tried playing some of the Wario games for the gameboy advance. Finished Warioware in one afternoon (very fun short little collection of mini games) and currently on Wario Land 4. It’s a platformer with light puzzle elements, and I’m quite surprised at how much I’ve been enjoying it, as I usually don’t mesh with platformers.
In a way, it reminds me of one of the later Commander Keen games, but with much better level design and variety in gameplay.
It’s a polished and quirky little game, and its handheld roots lend itself to short sessions, which has been all I have time for.
I think I’ll be investigating the earlier entries after I complete it. Certainly recommend it if you have access to a handheld emulator!
Slugs for salt 2025!
It’s like a perk from Sid Meier’s Civilization
Even the creator of that experiment said it was deeply flawed, and that their colony broke down because there was literally nothing to enrich their lives in the habitat. They were essentially going crazy from boredom.
He then went on to design rat experiments that were designed to actually facilitate a fulfilling and engaging life for the rats, and they thrived, from what I recall.
That sounds eerily similar to a situation in Secret of NIMH (the book, not the movie), when the rats
being taught how to read discover how to open their cages at night and decide to free the caged mice next to them out of empathy, who then aid in their escape.
In my experience, there’s only been a handful of mods and an equally small number of instances where I feel that is likely to happen, but for the most part it seems most mods have a pretty light touch. I’ve only had one negative experience with a mod, personally, and I post quite a bit.
Comment removal is federated, but .World can only remove comments left in .World communities, they have no power to remove comments left in a different instance’s community.
So if the mods of thing@lemmy.world are acting in a way you don’t approve, you could use thing@sopuli.xyz instead, and the .World mods would be powerless to moderate you.
I would prefer the USPS bring back basic banking at their branches.
Looks like they trialed doing that a bit.
Thanks Blaze ^^
Short answer:
It would be the same people. Changing instances is just changing your access point to lemmy. Your ‘local’ tab will change to show only communities that were created on that new instance, but your ‘all’ and ‘home’ tabs will show all the same communities and posts that you see now on lemmy.world, and all the same people will be there.
Long answer explaining how this whole system works in detail:
Lemmy is a federated platform, which just means each server is interconnected with each other.
Imagine if you downloaded lemmy and installed it onto your computer directly, turning your own computer into a server/instance, just like hosting a game server for minecraft. You could send the link for your server to your friends, and they could connect to your computer and create accounts for themselves there, which would let them create communities that all your friends would see show up in their local tab view.
But if one of your friends put a link to a lemmy.world community in the search bar of your lemmy, it would tell your server to reach out to lemmy.world across the internet and create a connection between your server and that lemmy.world community, and to keep thst connection going forever, meaning that any posts or comments that are made to that lemmy.world community will automatically send copies to your server, basically mirroring them, and allowing posts to show up in your friends ‘all’ view, or if they subscribe to that lemmy.world community, those posts will show up in their ‘home’ view as well, along with any other subscriptions they have. But their ‘local’ view will only ever show the communities that they made on your server on your computer.
If your friends comment on those mirrored posts that were sent to your server, your server will send them to the lemmy.world community where it will then distribute out your friends comments to any other server/instance that has users subscribed to that community too, so that those servers can mirror those comments as well, thus making everyone able to communucate with eachother no matter what instance they are logging in from.
So the only major change between instances is their local view.
Sopuli.xyz is a solid general instance, as is discuss.online.
In addition to what Blaze said, bear in mind you can use the same username on a different instance when creating a new account, only the @ part will change.
First, I’d recommend going to your settings page and exporting your profile data, this will let you take your subscriptions and block list with you.
Then head on over to https://join-lemmy.org/instances, and pick an instance that interests you. Personally, I would recommend Sopuli.xyz, since they have good admins, an up-to-date lemmy, and a good sized community.
If you have Anarchist leanings, I’d recommend Lemmy.dbzer0 or slrpnk.net
It’s also possible to build a very effective and safe alcohol space heater with about $7 of parts, which can be kept on-hand in case of emergency.
