Hello Crewmates and welcome to tonight’s episode of Criti-
Waaait a minute. Sorry, I meant to say — our collab with Critical Role is out now on all platforms!
Roleplayers rejoice! Adventure awaits as you try to perceive the Impostor, roll high on your task checks, and hopefully avoid that TPK in update v2024.8.13. Will donning the threads of members from Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, or Bells Hells save you from an untimely death at the hand of the Impostor? Well… you may certainly try.
Getting to work alongside the wonderful crew of the hit TTRPG show Critical Role to bring some of their magic to Among Us for Gilmore’s Curious Cosmicube has been mind blowing. Be sure to go to our in-game store and spend some Stars before the Cosmicube is gone on November 12th, 2024 at 7am UTC / 2am ET! For those in the Pacific time zone the Cosmicube will be gone on November 11th, at 11pm.
If you need a refresher on how Cosmicubes work check out this article so you have advantage on your knowledge check.

I have to say it. I’ve loved CR since the initial stream on Geek And Sudry. Hell, I was one of the people that sent a pizza on stream in C1. In a way this breaks my heart because this feels like step one to true sell out. Yeah, yeah, I know that once you hit a certain point that this is going to happen and you shouldn’t harass, berate, or badger any kind of artist/creator when the time comes (because if they are good enough, it certainly will). Yes, I’m very aware of the KickStarter. I’m also aware that they’ve only sold the CR property to my knowledge once before and that was to a much “smaller” game that was specifically an RPG.
With this purchase (let’s be real - that’s what it was), it feels like CR is at the verge of not caring about the branding of them being a “live play” TTRPG. One step more and you have CR skins in a few AAA games.
I love CR to death, and think that Matt is an exemplary DM, and the players are all above what most of us could aspire to be, but I’ll be damned if they keep selling off their property like this. Next up - a “How do you want to do this?” emote in Fortenite?
You mean like in Pillars of Eternity Dead fire?

What would you say is “a true sellout” for CR? Seems like a fine line between that and just organically expanding their brand?
That is a very, very hard question to answer. Effectively, there’s nothing obvious that happens over a long period of time. In the span of about a decade, Metallica went from “point our speakers to that guy recording!” to “If you didn’t pay for this song, we’re suing!”. I really do understand that the underlying product of CR is inherently a business at this point. What I’m scared of is exactly what happened in the most recent episode: An ad for WoW that wasn’t even a sponsor spot but took up a considerable amount of time both in the preroll and during the break. I understand that Laura is deeply involved in WoW, but this really felt over the top for me. Just an ad that takes up several minutes of the episode without even needing to say they are a sponsor.
Yeah that’s fair. I guess it’s a subjective line. Each of us probably have our own ideas of what a CR sellout looks like, and it’s probably hard to anticipate. We might just hit a wall someday and be like “CR used to be about live play D&D” haha.
I haven’t watched the last few episodes so I don’t know the specific ad you’re referring to but I have in the past thought that about some ads that others love. I don’t like NordVPN as a company so I wasn’t too happy about the many, long ads they had, but Sam and the rest of the gang is too charming.
Honestly for me the one thing that’s bugging me is the number of new merch they seem to have every week or two. I get wanting to have some. I’m sure it’s a big part of their income. But it’s a lot. And to me this Among Us deal is kinda like merch but digital so not really worse or anything. Just another thing they have in their catalog.
During the campaign, there were episodes involving trust exercises with Fearne’s “Nanna Morri” (starting at C3E79: To Hurt is to Heal).
In the time leading up to those episodes, lots of Among Us/CR crossover fan art came out and this small nod to that moment doesn’t surprise me or strike me as “selling out”. I personally don’t plan to buy any of it, but I think it’s cutesy stuff that fits the CR M.O.
