As a general rule any English word even vaguely related to science that starts with “al” was invented by some nerd in Bagdhad in 1084 ad
Alcohol “is a medieval loan from Arabic al-kuḥl, a powdered ore of antimony used since antiquity as a cosmetic, and retained that meaning in Middle Latin.”
and then alcohol ended up getting loaned back into arabic as (al-)kuḥūl
