For me it generally means being in a somewhat stable state, generally content with where you are and where you are likely to go.
Stability. Stable housing, stable employment, stable relationships, stable emotions, and enough money saved that I’m not fucked if anything turns out unstable. Having been unstable in all these ways when I was younger that stability is something I’ve been willing to sacrifice for.
I think you can have your life together without having the savings, but you would at least be trying to build savings.
That’s fair, though if I’m putting it that way I’d say professional stability or savings is enough
i dont think “having your life together” is really a thing. life is change and it never really stops. having your life together implies a sort of completeness to your life that cant exist. or thats been my experience so far at least. maybe someday ill find out im wrong. that would be cool.
The only thing constant in life is change is one of my favorite sayings.
I definitely have similar feelings as you. It feels a bit too much like an intricate balancing act for me to feel like it’s ever “together”. Some days are more together than others though!
“Having your life together” is the state you’re supposed to be in after the “when I grow up”-phase is completed, a phase in which you are expected to master the art of “adulting”.
You always know what to do, never clueless and of course well prepared for whatever life throws your way.
So basically a lot of bullshit, something people tell you to achieve because they are tired of hearing about your struggles.
Hard disagree. Everyone will always experience moments of cluelessness and having your life together doesn’t mean that you need to know and be capable of everything. It means you are generally stable (not about to become homeless or have a psychiatrist crisis, for example) and have been for a while. That’s really about it.
That’s exactly why I wrote that it is “a lot of bullshit”.
I can afford my life without relying on anyone. I’ve accomplished the major milestones I wanted (homeownership, postgraduate degree). Now that goalpost has moved to maintaining the enclosure and adding skills. Basically always be proactive. Even if it’s little things.
Being relatively independent. At least enough to fulfill my reasonable desires.
Nothing. We’re all trying our best.
It means you’re NOT looking forward to the collapse of society.
