I was expecting the real deterrent to be the bucket of concrete that cagers would try to run over thinking it was empty.

While in no way am I saying we shouldn’t do more to protect pedestrians (I think cars should be banned for most people) this is kind of a “Most shark attacks happen in 3ft of water” statistic

Halloween is the most deadly day for child pedestrians because it’s the day where there are the most child pedestrians. If you reduced car vs pedestrian crashes by 99%, Halloween would still be the most deadly day.

and also the US is so car centric that this is the only day left when lots of children walk with their feet. and even this is being eroded, i’ve heard that parents now drive their kids to a common location so they can do trick or treating in a parking lot from the backs of the trucks.

All I’m saying is that maybe national drunk driving day and national child pedestrian day maybe shouldn’t be on the same day.

No way is drunk driving affecting kids that trick or treat from 5-7pm. Which are the usual hours for actual kids to be out that day.

there’s not usually a well enforced curfew for trick or treaters or a designated time people start drinking grain alcohol, get your head out of your ass.

we’ve had a pretty solid trick or treat curfew for decades and while saturday is probably more day-drinky than a weekday surely there’s a temporal correlation with the amount of drunk drivers

your statement is reasonable, unlike who I’m replying to–in outright denial. curfews exist on paper but it being a holiday about shirking social convention i have my doubts of their effectiveness before we even get to the uselessness of police and infeasibility of enforcement in suburban sprawl. and yeah, people drunk drive more as nights go on, but holidays and earlier sunsets both exacerbate it. like, there’s a social convention to give booze to the parents escorting their kids trick or treating, of course there will be some overlap between the heap of drunks and latergrain treatlers

So the day every kid is gonna go out on the street instead of staying home is the day more of them get into traffic accidents? But correlation does not imply causation?! How is this possible?!

I am all for banning cars on Halloween, but I don’t like how this article acts like this should be surprising news to anyone.

    Forget tainted candy

Maybe anything beyond the two day news cycle becomes non specific to me, but wasn’t there a coordinated media push to say China was putting fent in candy a few years back? Is that what this is about?

I feel like there’s some deeper suburban paranoia under that line. Average soy PMC DSA neoliberal: “The time of the year children go outside to kind of sort of interact with other people outside of house pod and car pod, they are exposing themselves to significant risk! They should buy sugar and chocolate products on their own. Buying it themselves and consuming it alone will teach them the value of hard work.”

All dude had to do was step on the hood and walk over the car. What, Christine is going to stab him with her wiper blades?

I guess the shitters of the world in 1979 were out of shape.

Also, self immolating your Chevy would be an awesome themed Halloween costume for you and your car.
