I just signed up through this lemmy.world thing. Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? This federation thing could be better explained.
Nonetheless, I find Reddit’s disrespect for its users to be an ill omen. A 1-month deadline for anything as deeply ingrained as 3rd-party apps sends a clear message that Reddit doesn’t want to compromise. On the desktop, I use old.reddit.com, but for mobile, I use 3rd-party apps from the open-source F-Droid app store. I don’t mind ads, I just like my user interface to enhance my workflow, not slow me down, track me, and actively annoy me.
As far as I understand federation, all instances update each other over ActivityPub (think RSS for instances). You can interact with any content on any other federated instance EXCEPT make a community on an instance you’re not on.
I’ve been here a few days and the federation thing is slowly making sense. Give it time and welcome aboard!
Instead of being username on reddit youre now username@instance. As long as your instance and my instance are set to talk then its like we are on one big server. I can sub to communities out of my instance and post content and others can do the same with communities on my instance
if you see a community on a different instance that you cant find on yours you can even paste the whole link in the community search bar and if you are the first subscriber from your instance you’ll add it to the search bar for your whole instance (as long your instances talk)
It’s pretty dang cool and now that its got momentum I cant wait to see where it goes
It should be fine, except someone told me that we can see stuff from Beehaw, but Beehaw can’t see stuff from us. Because Beehaw chose to set up their site that way. IDK why or any other details of that, though.

Admins of an instance can block other instances. If you scroll to the bottom of the front page on your instance you see an “Instances” link that shows which are linked and which are blocked. The instance you log into may have a few blocked, but most should be linked.
Evidently Beehaw has decided not to participate with a good number of outside instances. This is a toxic approach and defeats the whole point of the Fediverse. They have the right to operate how they want, but they should be avoided in protest.
