I only know Thanksgiving from American TV shows so maybe I miss something important but it seems to be entirely about the food and having your racist uncle yell at you. So what’s even the point?

    • its just a big shared meal. like its on a thursday, so banks and a lot of non retail businesses historically gave everyone thursday and friday off. like a 4 day weekend.

its not really a ton of time for travel, but generally family that live near each other come to a house. the host does a turkey in the oven, maybe others bring a dish. common items include mashed potatoes, creamed corn, pumpkin pie. i.e. “fall harvest” items.

show up, eat/drink, watch an american football game, argue, nap, and then split the leftovers to take home.

next day (friday) is leftovers or shopping for deals if you are one of those freaks.

i live too far from family to make the trip, but for several years i went to this “friendsgiving” thing where all the far-from-home people clustered at a house for a big potluck and it was easily my fave holiday of the year. just come together with a mix of friends/new people, eat some food, and hangout/go home when its dark.

the idea of “celebrating” Thanksgiving without food is like Christmas without gifts or halloween without candy/costumes. it would be absurd.
