The community name has been changed, but the c/steamdeck part cannot be changed without creating a new community.

In the previous discussion on whether to include Steam Machine/Steam Frame/Steam OS, the majority of the responses wanted to include the new hardware, at least for the time being.

Part of this decision is that, right now, the fediverse isn’t really large enough to support multiple hardware-specific Steam OS communities. However, if the community grows or it becomes apparent that the communities need to be separated, we can do that at a later time.

As always, feedback is encouraged and welcome.

I think a migration to a properly provisioned community is a better idea. It seems Voyager and other clients don’t display whatever you supposedly changed by default. (I know, the display name).

Changing the display name isn’t enough. And I don’t think “the community is too small” is a good excuse to mangle this one.

I keep seeing the same name (Voyager for iPad) is there anything I need to do, or am I just fine?

Unfortunately it depends on the app and where you view it. The app I use (Thunder) shows Steam Hardware at the top of the community and in the community list, but shows “steamdeck” in small texts under posts still.

I still get numbness in my extremities when I think about Valve releasing 3 hardware products at once. But yeah splintering the communities for each hardware on such a smol platform makes no sense.

Oh neat. I feel like it’s going to be a good choice as long as people remember to use flairs.

Based on previews it really looks like they solved wireless PC VR. I still have an ancient original HTC Vive that I use veeeeryyy rarely. I’ve been tempted to jump on the Big Screen Beyond 2, but I’m gonna wait to see how reviews for the Frame shake out

Same! I’m planning to get one as close to launch as I can. I’ve been waiting on VR and this 100% seems like what I’ve been looking for. Super excited.

I think the renaming is the right move, in order to not confuse anyone. Congratz “on the upgrade”. And well done asking what the community thinks before doing this. I wasn’t a fan of this, if the name was kept. But this way, it makes perfect sense.

I would argue that having a display name that indicates something different than the true name could lead to confusion for people like me who always disable showing display names (for both users and communities). Though, I am not sure how common it is for people to use this setting like me.

With all that said, in the end, this is probably the best solution for the community. I can’t be too disappointed.

It’s a shame that the c/steamdeck part can’t be renamed, but it’s also normal to encounter limitations from time to time…

Maybe it’s it’s the first community in need of such a change and it’ll be implemented at one point…

Yeah I pray it has a decent experience for modern games and isnt just an indie game box.

The deck can play ghost of tsushima, while not a recent game, it is definetly the best looking game I have ever played. The steam machine can probably run modern AAA games (without any AC/DRM)

Can I ask the community if they’re having the same issues as I with the background recording? It’s been busted for me for months (and others) but others seem unaffected. It’s driving me insane trying to work around it.

I think the comm name and display name not matching will make it a bit confusing for people to post to…

I suggest calling it “Steam Deck and Hardware discussion”

Good stuff. The Frame is going to be pretty major in another tangential way. Right now the best mobile SoC to emulate PC games on Android is the 8 Gen 3. Comparing what ragtag teams in the open source world do with Proton/Fex/box64 in the Android world compared to Valve with the same tech but with full time employees in the primary linux world will be a great comparison for what can conceivably be done with our mobile phones
