      Oh, it’s not all like this. China isn’t Heaven on Earth. It’s just … well … as someone who’s lived in a lot of the world it’s telling that I’ve spent more years in China now than any country other than Canada (my country of citizenship) … and that only barely.

        China certainly has its problems; if it had better LGBT+ laws, I would be more inclined to try living there as an expat (particularly to get out of the U.S. in this political moment, which feels increasingly unsafe), but it’s just not possible until they recognize same-sex marriage (I wouldn’t be eligible for a spousal visa until then). Instead, the government seems to be cracking down on LGBT+ folks, e.g. jailing women for writing gay erotica and shuttering LGBT+ centers
