Sex scenes exist for other reasons than being pornographic.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sex scene and went “yes this is necessary for the plot”.
I mean that’s already an odd way to look at it. Like when you watch a movie do you go “I’m sure they could have told this story without all those action scenes”? Sex scenes can tell us about characters and their relationship to one another, it can tell us how a character is feeling and it can be a great way to set the mood for a scene.
I do in fact do that.
Most action scenes, sex or violence, are pointless and convey nothing. It’s really fucking frustrating, because it could, you could fit so much characterization so much perspective. And they just never fucking do.
There are absolutely action scenes where they’re there because they should be. Especially if it’s an action movie where the point is all the cool fighting scenes. John Wick would fucking suck if his dog got shot and then he went to a therapist.
If what I wanted was a sex scene then I’d watch porn.
