NEW YORK — Leaders of Young Republican groups throughout the country worried what would happen if their Telegram chat ever got leaked, but they kept typing anyway.
They referred to Black people as monkeys and “the watermelon people” and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies and driving them to suicide and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.
I’d love to say this surprises me, but it does not in the slightest.
Hating and differentiating people based on race is pretty rational as long as you believe race is a real thing. That’s kinda why it’s called race-ism.

I’ll grant “differentiating”, sure, but hating? Hard disagree.
People end up hating/rationalizing people being bad because they believe they believe people are different races.
There’s a big difference between something being rational and being able to rationalize it.
Indeed.
Race is a thing. It is a social construct, but it’s a thing.
Exactly - just because a thing is a social construct, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or that it somehow doesn’t affect people in real ways.
Racism is a real thing. Culture is real. Nationality is real. Ethnic heritage is real.
But race is not, in the same way that my made up category of “things that i think are bad” is not real. Yes, it exists, I guess for some people. But as a universal concept that is solidly definable, no.
Wanna try? Define me a race.
