I don’t think daily usage necessitates addiction. In my opinion addiction is continually use despite negative repercussions because of fear of withdrawal / not being able to operate without it.

Like I have sugary coffee almost every day but I wouldn’t say I’m addicted because I’m not experiencing any negative consequences from it. If I were gaining weight or having heart problems and still kept to it then I’d say that’s an addiction.

Same with pot, some people can use it every day without suffering many consequences. If your gaining weight from the munchies, or getting a smokers cough, or becoming antisocial etc. and still use it, that’s when it becomes problematic.

I forget the details but I learned from my sister who worked in a rehab clinic that there are clinical criteria to diagnose addiction:

      1. Taking the substance in larger amounts or for longer than you’re meant to
      2. Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to
      3. Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance
      4. Cravings and urges to use the substance
      5. Not managing to do what you should at work, home, or school because of substance use
      6. Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
      7. Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
      8. Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger
      9. Continuing to use, even when you know you have a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance
      10. Needing more of the substance to get the effect you want (tolerance)
      11. Development of withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance

How would you feel/do, when there is a stressful day and you cannot have your coffee?

As for pot, i have met and been a daily smoker for many years. Everybody i knew that smoked daily had some social or personal issues and it definitely affected their ability to focus, memory and emotional awareness negatively.

I don’t think that daily use of psychoactives can go without addiction. It can be beneficial as medication for some, but there will be side effects and withdrawal symptoms, like with non psychoactive medication too.
