One in five Americans (20 per cent) polled by Leger this week say they would like their state to join Canada, more than double the proportion of Canadians who said they would like their country to become the 51st state of the United States. Article content
“Only 9 per cent of Canadians believe it is likely that Canada will become the 51st U.S. state. By contrast, 20 per cent of Americans would like their state to join Canada and become a Canadian province, a proportion that is higher among respondents aged 18 to 34 (30 per cent),” reads the new Léger report.
Isn’t this apples to oranges?
9% of Canadians “believe it is likely Canada will become 51st state” vs. 20% of Americans “would like their state to join Canada”
Good catch, those are two very different things being compared as if they are equivalent. I would expect that the number of Canadians who actually want Canada to get annexed by the US is lower than the number who think it is likely.
Other similar polls in the timeframe put “would want to” at about 9% as well. Some are even phrased as “would vote to”.
What surprised me was the 18-34 demo who are apparently about 17% for it.
That being said, the quality of a lot of these polls aren’t great. Many aren’t random samples and come with a big disclaimer.
But, still, none have been as high as 20%. That’s crazy high as a national average. Really curious breakdown by state. The most support for joining to USA is AB and it’s still around just 13%. This suggests the most “I want to leave” state wants to join Canada much more than the most “I want to leave province” wants to join the USA.
