I’m a stalwart nicotine hater personally, never even tried it because I would probably like it too much, like other stimulants, but I have to admit like 90% of my IRL comrades smoke cigs and that shit has had an impact on my view of smoking. Its not exactly cool, and I still feel bad because I know and see that it’s hurting them (and me a little) in the long run, but I’m not gonna pretend there’s nothing aesthetically/vibe wise pleasing about it (which is the legacy of decades advertising and astroturfing but… it worked I guess). Once in a while it makes me wish I could still smoke weed or something on the reg and be a normal functional human, just so I’d have something too when everyone’s smoking.

Vapes do not have that cool factor, but I guess can be good harm reduction. zyns are even more boring and gross. unfortunately that is probably a lot of what prevents my comrades from switching. plus the whole industrial manufacturing situation vs cigs which you can roll your own (kind of a false dichotomy since the rolling tobacco is also quite processed… but that seems to be a factor for people)

custom emoji is a default part of the lemmy software, if under-utilized by other instances, if your preferred app or frontend doesn’t implement rendering of emojis at a reasonable emoji size, that’s their problem IMO

My point is mostly about the reasoning though. like if the point is to prevent our content from being scraped for LLM training, anubis doesn’t solve that problem, because we are federated with non-anubis instances, and because anubis doesn’t protect the API, which is pretty wide open. If the point is just to protect the servers from the undue load generated by aggressive dumb scrapers, then anubis makes sense, but its not the only tool that can do that certainly

federation makes preventing ai scraping a challenge. and I don’t know about recently, but in the past I’ve noticed a lot of pushback to anything making the site less accessible to older devices, browsers, non-typical software configurations, etc. (hence the creation of diethex.net).

But if it makes the site more stable maybe that’s worth it.

NATO plans to no longer rely on US aircraft as it renews its fleet of reconnaissance planes, according to sources within the military alliance.

The future fleet of NATO’s Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft (AWACS) will consist of aircraft from made by Canada’s Bombardier, equipped with the GlobalEye reconnaissance, and an early warning system developed by Sweden’s Saab, NATO sources confirmed to dpa after an initial report by the French portal La Lettre.

The order is expected to include up to 12 Global 6000 or Global 6500 aircraft, worth several billion dollars.

Not a shocking development, but its looking more official and I hadn’t seen this posted here
