I think some survivorship bias factors in. From what I hear, restaurants are enormously expensive to get off the ground and have a very high early failure rate as businesses but once they have survived for 3 or so years, management gets much easier and profit margins are able to grow.

Consequently, in my experience, successful restaurants are indeed run by local rich kulak assholes with McMansions and luxury cars who fuck off around the world for weeks at a time when they aren’t back at the store berating their workers.

I’ve met and worked with asshole servers too and a few servers are comfortable snobs and class traitors but most are not. We shouldn’t stereotype our fellow workers like this, comrade.

As a yank, I suspect it’s partly what you’re saying and partly just another aspect of the USAmerican “taxation = theft” psyop/brainworm. Taxation is made intentionally confusing and inconvenient here in order to manufacture consent for the gutting of our paltry social services.

Employers should but most of them won’t until they are made to through labor and community action. In the meantime, using the services of a tip-dependent workplace and then not tipping only hurts those workers, not their employer.

Tip culture is bad because it drives down wages. We should seek to abolish tipping and raise wages directly but until it is abolished, folks should tip well when it is expected and otherwise avoid going places where they are expected to tip. Don’t be a
