  • The whole situation with LLMs is so incredibly infuriating. The technology itself is genuinely cool. But the fucking greedy tech bros make it actively worse by training it to pretend it was some autonomous artificial intelligence that it so clearly is not. And due to all the consequences from capitalism milking the shit out of it the whole fucking society goes to shit and now you are left with basically two factions: on the one hand you have the evangelicals that honestly think that LLMs are the best thing since sliced bread and it will revolutionize the world and on the other hand you have the haters that think LLMs are a total scam and just as bad as any other autocomplete, which has been around for decades.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. The tech is actually pretty impressive but the tech companies are overselling it hard and train the LLMs to oversell themselves hard to impress investors and the public. This is the real reason for all the AI psychosis shit. You cannot blame gullible people for being gullible when the tech is actively designed to trick people. Don’t blame the people, don’t blame the tech, blame the fucking assholes that are responsible: The greedy fucking tech bros.

I personally use LLMs pretty much every day and i have personally also used it to plan trips. But i do know that it makes shit up all the time and i have to sift through the annoying sycophancy and useless rambling to get to the actual useful bits: A very efficient way to search for information that i know is probably widely available in books and the internet but would take me much more time to find manually.

I seriously think that this technology could be so much more useful if it was optimized for those kinds of tasks and would not pretend to be a sentient artificial intelligence all the time.

i seriously don’t understand the strong emotional reaction some people have against posts by “tankies”. Everything i have read here and in other .ml communities usually comes from an honest place as far as i can tell. Most if not all communists/marxists identify as such because they’ve identified issues with the prevailing system and try to find alternatives to improve the material conditions for everyone.

Even if every tankie is completely wrong about the history regarding e.g. the soviet union and what is happening in china right now, why the strong emotional reaction to it? Every single person reacting that way is not impacted by it in any way or form no matter what is true. So they could just as much react by saying “if what you are saying is true, that would be pretty cool, but i don’t see the evidence for it” or even “the good doesn’t outweigh the bad in my opinion”.

Instead, every single time it is “china propaganda!!!” or “ah so you like that stalin killed all those people and let even more starve to death”. No honest discussion can ever happen that way and i seriously don’t understand it. Can’t we just discuss what might be good for society and what might be bad and talk about the validity of different kinds of sources and evidence without a strong emotional attachment to anything either way?

you almost got it. Power does not corrupt. Power attracts narcissists and psychopaths. Those people have been corrupt before. There are hierarchies all over the place where people higher up have authoritative control over the people (or even other beings) below them and the vast majority of those do not abuse this power hierarchy. Those people that do are mentally ill. It is just the higher you look the more likely you’ll find a mentally deranged narcissist because those are the people that really are into that shit and thus exert the effort to get there. For everybody else it is not worth it.

  • that is who is usually referred to as tech bros imo. It’s the elon musks, the people that are in charge and seem to have a superficial understanding of the technology (more than what tou can say about most CEOs unfortunately) but are actually only interested in money. The people that actually innovate and work on the technologies are often smarter than that.

Unfortunately someone needs to pay the bills and those people are passionate enough about the technology that they end up working for the tech bros and ultimately contribute to the problems

  • Are you bored? Did you just build a strawman version of your own community to argue about something that is trivially easy to answer for everyone in this community? I am seriously confused. I have never ever heard anyone say that you could turn any distro into any other. That is just obviously not true. And every single question on your bullet point list is equally easy to answer.

When people say that it doesn’t matter which distro you use what they obviously mean is that the desktop environment has the way more immediate and tangible impact on the user experience. So as long as the newcomer choses one of the many distros that have an intuitive installer (so obviously not Arch), are reasonably up to date, have a broad software package repository, and come with one of the major environments pre installed, it really does not matter that much.

this goes for literally everything. Someone might still experience it as obnoxious and intolerable. Me included

I am with you on generally trying to understand the reasons for a particular behavior. Does not always help with being annoyed by it though. Especially if they apply their world view to everyone else around them and start to judge you for enjoying work/life balance

  • guys seriously … Science literacy is important. That especially goes for the incompetent editors at the guardian. This is NOT a study. This is a blog post describing that the particular UCL research group got a research grant accepted. In other words, they got grant money, so they can produce research on this topic IN THE FUTURE. Notice, that everything in that post is written in future tense except for the paragraph called “Research to date” and there is NO RESULTS.

Yes of course, this correlation is obvious. That is why there has been an abundance of research done on this topic already. But of course, as is the case with pretty much every field in science, this topic remains incredibly important and doing more research there will always remain important. Research is an ongoing process and most scientific publications are minute incremental improvements in understanding. So everyone who is saying “hurr durr this is obvious, so much money wasted on such nonsense”, please shut the fuck up and LEARN TO READ

Sorry for the profanity. Having worked in research, i am quite disillusioned by the common misunderstanding of the scientific process.
