  • The people who can get holidays off are generally the people who have the means to vote otherwise.

Until the last few years, the only time I had holidays off were if I could get someone to switch with me, meaning at least someone was working that day.

Labor day didn’t mean shit to me working at fast food, and retail has sales instead of closing.

Walmart ain’t closed on labor day and neither is McDonald’s.

That’s the first and second largest employers in the world, not respecting the holiday literally made for their employees.

  • A printer is an interesting example, because for many people a 3d printer is just a means to an end, there is a big difference between hot rodding a used $70 ender in order to print 10 minute benches, and buying a prusa or bambu in order to manufacture parts for their business.

These two sides get conflated a lot, with conversations leaning between them and people missing the other sides point, there is a sliding scale with a lot of hobbies with this I think.

Something like skateboarding as an example, has a much larger percentage of hobbyists versus professionals, so the conversation is easier to maintain.

  • It’s because computer science degrees aren’t really programming degrees.

A computer science degree sets you up to be a scientist, most common dev jobs are just glorified Lego sets patching libraries together and constructing queries. There is skill, knowledge, and effort in those jobs, but they are fundamentally different.

Most common software dev jobs are closer to the end user than not.

  • The image in the article shows the entire thing being 20cm and the actual ‘blade’ portion of the toy being around 13cm long. a little longer than the blade on a pretty standard multi tool like a Leatherman.

Is this seriously what the police were actually concerned about, I understand that it’s different in the UK vs the US, but this is definitely overkill. This thing would need to be pinched between your thumb and index finger like a cigarette to be wielded and is arguably less dangerous than a fork.

  • I know too many people whose dogs and cats died from getting run over.

Also, I was bit in the face by an off leash dog as a child, went to the hospital, they had to stitch my lips back together.

A “well trained dog” is very subjective and requires a well disciplined person, and a “well trained dog” can still get confused, scared, or angry.

It’s like saying seatbelts are absurd because a good driver doesn’t crash.
