  • I lost some respect for jables here, the way he’s seemingly throwing Kage under the bus… But at the same time I can recognise that JB has always tried to keep up a positive persona. Not apolitical but he’s never been the type to promote violence directed at specific people. Kyle did him kinda dirty by doing something to potentially harm that (assuming he was truthful when he said he was blindsided by it, and not just saying that after it blew up in the news).

Not saying Kyle is wrong and Jack is right here, though. I’ve always felt a little bad for Kyle that Jack put tenacious D and therefore Kyle on the sidelines when his Hollywood career took off. Kyle was rightfully quite jaded about that and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s led him to doing this without considering the possible consequences for Jack.

The whole thing sucks for both of them, I guess.

The appeal of iDubbz back in the content cop days was that it was unfiltered and gritty. I never much cared for the jackass style shock factor things he did together with filthy Frank but he was the king of burning down vapid youtube one-day-wonders like ricegum.

It has a huge “you had to be there” factor nowadays though in my opinion. I have never felt compelled to go back and rewatch anything because it just doesn’t seem to fit into this era of the internet.

  • The judge would use this sign to make an example of you.

As they should. It seems like common sense that this sign should be enough and anybody that ignores it “is an idiot that has themselves to blame for the discomfort of food poisoning”. But it’s suddenly a whole different story when your grandma of 82 has died a painful death from severe salmonella infections just because she forgot her reading glasses that day.

The risk of death is tiny but nevertheless an unacceptable risk to assume just so some other people can keep buying their snack for a couple of days instead of shutting down the machine.

(Pre-edit: this became much longer than intended. You struck a chord in me it seems.)

You’ve articulated this so very well. It’s a lesson that took me many years to learn and comes with the prerequisite of respecting yourself and respecting your partner to such a degree that the relationship comes second for both of you. Each person’s first priority should be themselves. Both parties need to respect that to the point of accepting that staying together is not a given and is contingent on both parties being fully satisfied with the direction your lives together is heading.

The funny thing is that I’ve never felt more confident in my relationship since learning that. I used to think that’s putting the relationship second to yourself is antithetical to commitment but actually it’s the other way around. The only way to fully commit to a relationship is to make sure that maintaining it is a concious choice rather than an expectation or given.

The way my dad illustrated this lesson in my youth (and I took the advice but only recently learned the full meaning of it) is like this: life is a journey down a road with many crossroads. Should you find a partner, you walk together. If you hit a crossroad and can’t agree on a direction then thank each other for the lovely journey together but let them follow their own path. Find that partner that is going to the same destination and you’ll have found happiness in love.

  • Yeah, I don’t believe these megachurch pastors believe the word of God at all, or they wouldn’t be in that line of work.

Somehow in being an atheist I’m a more honest Christian than them in that I at least state outright that I’m not a Christian. That’s more honest than pretending to be Christian just to leverage people’s hopelessness to scam them into an even more dire and hopeless situation.

Wow. What an incredible let down. He really has abandoned science. Any biologist worth their salt understands that biology is never binary. He fucking knows better and chooses to present it as black and white while wilfully ignoring the massive spectrum in between.

I really expected more humanity from him.

  • I’d feel bad for the many people that will be economically trapped there. I can imagine even in that scenario that people will stay put simply because they can’t afford to up and move to a different state. The alternative would be to live in their car with their whole family in a neighbouring state, I assume.

Imagine the housing crisis when 50% of texans try to find a home in nearby states. And I’m being very conservative with that percentage, as I can’t imagine half of the population of texas would even support secession and would want to stay in their doomed state.

Well, you did a good job condensing where you were coming from in two paragraphs. Enough to make me realise that I mistook your original meaning completely. I hadn’t heard the 6 hours of work a week number before. In fact, I’ve never really questioned the logic I was taught with regards to agriculture being the start of civilisation due to freeing up hands and allowing people to settle down, because hunter gatherers would have to roam around at least a little to follow herds or seasonal effects on available forage. That understanding was based on what I’ve learned in history 101 at high school though.

I started out a bit argumentative because I read your comment as an overly dramatic lamentation that I took to mean something like: “people are so bad I wish we weren’t born/evolved”. Thanks for taking the time to kindly explain. I’m always interested in having a possible blind spot or internalised assumption revealed and to reassess entrenched beliefs.
