  • Elitism: the advocacy or existence of an elite as a dominating element in a system or society.

What you just described is exactly how elitism works. I understand the hate for Facebook and all of Meta’s products. However, this is exactly how gate keeping starts. I don’t want to see the fediverse go anywhere more than the next person but it becomes contradicting and hypocritical to the entire establishment of the fediverse if Lemmy or other federated apps begin to decide who can and can’t be federated. That is the whole image right? To prevent gate keeping and to establish that not one person owns any one portion of Lemmy, Mastodon, etc. However, what happens when an entity on Lemmy does start deciding to defederate a Conglomerate starts making decisions just like Facebook? The does Lemmy not start fitting the bill of not being able to tolerate the intolerance as well? To me that becomes elitism the very thing Lemmy users swear is a perfect system.

I don’t believe Meta is good for anyone or anything but Lemmy users need to understand that you can’t say, “we are different.” And then justifying the very contradiction of being exactly the same by just saying, “Facebook takes freedom.” I don’t like Facebook infact fuck them but either Lemmy users admit they need to play the game like Facebook and that someone controls who is a part of content and who isn’t or they don’t. Just stop trying to find ways that this would be “different” just fucking say, “we want to control the content that is on the platform and who can be a part of it.” Because now you are playing the Meta game on their own terf. Just tired of Lemmy users thinking they are special.

  • “it doesn’t say giant tech platforms have the right to make money off of it.”

I am not defending what meta is doing but there is literally more evidence to suggest big tech can do what they want because there are no laws that say they can’t make money off of it. You can be upset all you want but blame the system for not putting restrictions in place for platforms getting away with doing these things. Bitching about Google and Facebook being evil doesn’t do anything. Unless something legally and lawfully changes nothing is going to change.

  • I used to have a buddy that said, “tell me the difference between an anarchist and a libertarian.” When I would ask what or someone would as a what. He would say, “Libertarians are just anarchists in denial.”

Despite what you think the values are not entirely far off and both are kind of silly one believes in the government not interfering with your business until that government isn’t supporting what they want it to support.

The other says, “I don’t want the government interfering with my business or anything at all until someone wants to run the portion the government can’t to support what the government wasn’t supporting for them.”

  • I don’t really check Lemmy that often. Hence why my usage has dropped off. I also have become less and less involved with social media over all, but I apologize where apologies are due if I happen to stumble upon something I said.

I regularly check history when I am on to see what was said. My Lemmy history isn’t great. I haven’t had an easy time getting integrated into Lemmy as I think it is just like Reddit.

Your comment, I read in a different context. It wasn’t until I went back and looked at my history of the comment you were looking at that I grasped what you were actually trying to do. I read it in the opposite light. I essentially thought you were saying, "well I found a post where they weren’t talking about Linux and big corpo but I got it backwards.

I owed you an apology regardless of time.
