I have seen this “processing” before. My assumption was that it sets cookies on third parties websites instead of only the one you visit. The basis for that assumption being that some ad network and tracker websites have/offer “opt out cookies”.

I haven’t checked whether that’s actually the case.

There is no other reasonably valid explanation for it. Setting a few cookies doesn’t take that much time. It would then be either intentionally slow and lying to you, or has horrendous unacceptable implementation (which could be seen as unlikely given how obviously customer facing it is).

• Lemmy is a platform of free and open source software, open to customizations and collaboration

• As such, both in software source and platform, Lemmy is a community project whereas Reddit is a private company (soon a public company owned by shareholders)
• Lemmy has an open API allowing for custom client, bot, and other integrations
• Lemmy uses the open ActivityPub protocol, so it can interact with many other platforms like Mastodon, KBin, etc

In many other ways, it is similar to Reddit. Like having upvotes and downvotes. Lemmy is still young, so it will improve in terms of functionality and annoyances.

If you render at 144 Hz you won’t be needing or seeing anything noticeable from variable refresh rates. It’s most useful at lower framerates. So it depends on how (fast) your games/engines will render moreso than the refresh rate and cable.

You said in a comment your monitor supports Freesync, so HDMI 1.4 is likely useable for variable refresh rates through Freesync. Either way you can skip it with a high refresh rate of 144 Hz.

There are two aspects to being prepared and actionable:

2. Not being surprised into freezing/shock

You can lessen your surprise through:

• Practice situations for automatism/intuitive reaction
• Consciously playing it in your head

The tracking reference is about Google captchas using logged-in user account and tracking information to gain confidence in a user being a person and not requiring challenges for them.

Simple CAPTCHA systems give you a challenge to complete, to show you are human. (As the Cloudflare post points out, it’s most of the time easier for bots to solve challenges than it is for humans. But botters still require expertise and solutions.)

Sophisticated CAPTCHA systems may use any information the web-browser sends them to make a guess on whether the user is human or not, according to probabilistic models. For example the click interaction means you move your cursor, which can be tracked and analyzed against patterns.

You can include what you deem unfit in the Natural Selection process too. Humans are part of reality, part of nature, part of Natural Selection process/environment.

A crop that can only survive with human culturing may be unfit without human intervention, but humans are there culturing it. The crop survives. The crop even replaces other crops that humans may have cultivated otherwise. The crop is still being naturally selected. So you have to include humans and that process in Natural Selection.

You give more meaning to life than natural selection or physics does. Arguing from that perspective is flawed. You’re equating and relating the wrong things.
