“I know what’s best for black people.”
– So many non-black conservatives
What makes this way spicier is that he’s black. He’s running for office while trying to abolish the holiday that celebrates his freedom in the country he’s running for office in.
Ramaswamy is South Asian, not black.
Most Republicans aren’t interested in the distinction.
Exactly.
What would possess you to think south Asian and black are mutually exclusive?
Are you seriously suggesting Vivek would have had civil rights in Georgia in 1846?
Are you seriously suggesting modern Iowans care what country your brown skin came from?
They’re suggesting that he’s not black
That’s right. Double down on your stupidity.
No, I’m suggesting he isn’t black.
And what color does his skin appear to you?
Brown.
Black means someone of African/African American origin
No it doesn’t. E.g. Elon Musk is of African origin, and there are many black people of European origin. Black means someone with dark brown skin.
Being black and not having civil rights in the mid 19th century are not the same thing.
You may have lost the thread; I’m accusing Vivek of hypocrisy over Juneteenth and you’re defending him, remember?
Nobody is defending this man in this thread, you need to touch grass bro.
They’re suggesting you’re stupid.
How high are you right meow?
How useful is Veterans Day or Labor Day? They’re all useless. We don’t have them for their usefulness.
I’m all for adding more holidays. A voting holiday is an easy win. No need to replace or remove holidays.
I would love for someone to interview racists who gets Juneteenth off for work. I’d be interested to know how committed some people would be being racist.
Agreed
Hypocrisy: the most Republicanist thing ever.
I’m confused why this guy is getting any attention. He’s running the most obvious “fake primary campaign with no intention of winning in order to get a bunch of donations from rubes” con I’ve ever seen
Most of the GOP field wants Trump to pick them as Vice President. That is why they don’t criticize Trump.
This guy doesn’t want to be VP. He just wants to con a bunch of donations money and disappear after Iowa.
Flippetyflop hippetibob, do the Politickster!
This is the best summary I could come up with:
“Cancel Juneteenth or one of the other useless ones we made up,” Ramaswamy told an applauding crowd gathered at a welding company here.
Asked by NBC News to clarify whether he thought Juneteenth was a “useless” holiday, Ramaswamy said, “I basically do.”
“We don’t just look back and flog ourselves,” Ramaswamy said in the video June 19, which was posted to his account on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
As the National Museum of African American History and Culture notes, Juneteenth celebrates the anniversary of when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced a quarter-million Black people had been freed by executive decree.
One of his competitors, former Rep. Will Hurd of Texas, who is biracial, criticized Ramaswamy for saying he “hopes to cancel a holiday that celebrates equality and freedom.”
On Juneteenth two months ago, the NAACP issued a statement saying, “Today we celebrate our emancipation while also acknowledging that we are still fighting for true freedom.”
I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Every holiday is useless. Even Christmas. You need a holiday to gather with family and exchange gifts?
He knows what Trump wants. No other reason.
I agreed with his getting rid of affirmative action, and increasing the voting age, but this one is crazy. What benefit is there to this.
EDIT: I’m already downvoted to hell but please look into his actual proposal, which I touched on below. The vast majority of 18-25 year olds who want to vote would still be able to, just with an extra step.
I’m curious, what do you think the voting age should be raised to and why?
Republicans want to raise voting age because young people are increasingly realizing that Republicans are authoritarian bigots.
*authoritarian bigots who want to destroy the world for a profit. FTFY
Sure. Let’s also prevent people from voting for the last 25 years of their life unless they serve in the military. /s
I’d love to know too, cause I’m actually for lowering it. If there are 15 year Olds working jobs at fast food restaurants or wherever, they should either a) be able to vote, or b) not have income tax taken out. No taxation without representation.
Even ten years olds know you don’t take babies from their mothers at the boarder. Let them vote.
His proposal is raising it to 26 unless you’re 18 or older and
a) have passed a civics test (same one that all immigrants are required to pass for citizenship)
or
b) have served in the military
I really don’t think this is unreasonable. That being said I think the age minimum for military eligibility should be raised as well…in my opinion most people this young are not mature enough to rationally make these big decisions.
We already had unpassable tests used to disenfranchise people for a long time. I wonder if you don’t know about those or just agree with how they were used.
The most ignorant and racist people I know are all over 25, why would you only want it for those under 26?
No matter what political affiliation you have, I would wager that the current mess was not created by 18 year olds voting but older people. So if you want to be ‘fair’ and ‘reasonable’, hoe about we put restrictions on older voters on a sliding and increasingly more difficult scale?
18 - 25 : your good to go 25 - 40 : you need some civics tests 40 - 60 : civic + psycholigical testing 60 - 70 : civics + psychological + dementia testing 70+ : you no longer get to vote as your time has past and consequences are no longer your concern yet can harm upcoming generations
If you want limitations and testing, this is a fair proposal. I guess you would logically have to agree with this, yes?
Why raise the voting age? Are we not paying income tax at 18 anymore?
All 3 are crazy, you just happened to find the one that was too crazy for you.
Less than half of 18-24 year olds even vote* and you want to decrease that further?
