i think it’s a valid interpretation but i absolutely know people who are more concerned that donald trump threatened to rename lake ontario than they are that the united states has been doing genocide in various places for 400 years. a lot of those people also don’t really seem to care about the hate speech, except if they can turn it into a gotcha about him being technically incorrect about something minor
