Currently inspired by a discussion on the beehaw discord.
The three I always end up listening to are:
- Heilung
- Ensiferum
- Falkenbach
Faun, Omnia, Eluveitie, Sava, Night Wish, Cultus Ferox, Corvus Corax, Schandmaul, Schelmish, Arkona, Danheim.
Holy shit! This is a niche?
It’s metal, it’s niches all the way down!
These guys are properly medieval

It’s black metal with a strong medieval flavor, banjo (?) and a bunch of wood instruments, actual songs - and quite nice production as well. If you enjoy both black metal shrieking and some silliness, this is a gem.
Heilung! And Wardruna. If you like Maria Franz I really liked the album she did with Songleikr, which is more folky
Oh my goddesses! Thanks to this thread I see that Heilung will be in my city later in the year!
While I happen to be a “heathen” and I enjoy rock and metal, I fail to see the connection between religion (or lack thereof) and the aforementioned musical genres.
Heathen (noun)
a person who does not belong to a widely held religion (especially one who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim) as regarded by those who do.
Pagans and people who are into pagan lore, mythology, etc. will often self-identify as heathens, especially in the metal community. It’s pretty common.
How seriously people mean it depends on the individual - some people really intend it as a serious identity and others call themselves that in a tongue-in-cheek larp-y kind of way.
