Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?

You’d just fire off an “ASL” to someone… It meant “age, sex, location”. And then you’d decide to get on with a conversation or not. ICQ (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICQ) was an instant messaging program and had some super delightful sound FX for different things. I remember having an ICQ number (member ID) under 11k and it was cool somehow…
