I mean, yeah. They’re cold and sparsely populated. Also Alaska is dark for like 23 hours a day several months of the year

A lot of suicides happen during the summer months when day light is constant.

Within the United States overall, suicide rates are above the annual average during the spring months, and below average during the winter months.7 Seasonal variations have been observed in high latitude regions with extended sun duration during the summer, and little or no sunlight during winter months. One study conducted in Greenland found a significant peak in suicide behavior in June, and found that north of the Arctic Circle, 48% of suicides took place when there was constant light.8 Also, when taking into consideration astronomical twilight, the period between dawn and sunrise, and sunset and dusk, it was found that 82% of suicides occurred during the constant light period experienced north of the Arctic Circle.8

Honestly, no idea. A quick search and read of some studies either confirm that there is a link between too much sun and suicide or that the amount of sun doesn’t affect it.

There does seem to be some sort of link between suicide and seasonality. That link seems to be under more investigation.

I 100% understand this is bad for normal people but:

      No heat
      No sun
      No Mosquitoes
      No Neighbors

      Huskies and Whales
      Heaven for me

Dude have you not heard about Alaskan mosquitoes. Like they’re legitimately one of the worst parts of that environment from everything I’ve read seen and talked to from people that I know that have lived there. They’re absolutely ravenous as they have a much shorter lifespan and breeding time due to the severity of weather.

what the hell!! I have NOT heard about Alaskan mosquitoes and now I’m very afraid. The extreme cold and long dark days can’t get rid of mosquitoes it gives them superpowers!

Also racism and their way of life dying out after several hundred years of outside forces routinely taking and giving nothing back.

If you can find a map of the “dry” (no alcohol) areas of Alaska and you’ll probably find them to be extremely similar if not identical.

Also South Korea beats Montana and Wyoming.

I think the implication was pretty clear that these places have the highest suicide rates within the USA.

But this isn’t TIL USA, so that clarification should be included, not implied.

Really? You see 3 different state names listed and the domain is cdc.gov. Your post history says you’re a Swiss resident and shows you commenting on a fair amount of American stuff, so you should know the CDC is American and more than likely is talking about American stuff.

If I saw you post from https://www.bag.admin.ch/, I would see a foreign domain and then look it up to understand what it is while using this wonderful thing called critical thinking to extrapolate that it’s probably going to be Swiss information.

I sure as fuck wouldn’t comment, “This isn’t TIL Switzerland, maybe you should have clarified!”

@kn33@lemmy.world is right in their reply.

There are two kinds of people in this world. The first can extrapolate from incomplete information. The second would apparently be yourself.

Just because current evolutionary pressures aren’t catering to your genetic predispositions doesn’t mean you’re not human. Consider how successful you’d be if the pandemic and social distancing had never stopped.

For the average person, sure, but some of us thrive in solitude. Like I have a family and that is great, but sometimes I want to just be alone and only a few people are more fun to be around than just being alone.

I’m as introverted as they come and I can’t stand the isolation like that. We need people around us to challenge ideas and have discourse otherwise it ends up getting cult-like real quick

Not sure how that would be an issue for just doing things while living like raising food, building and repairing things. It isn’t like I start thinking negative or harmful things when alone, the solitude actually makes it easier for introspection and questioning of ideas society promotes that are contradictory.

For me being an introvert is the reason I enjoy being alone with my thoughts. So much easier with fewer interruptions.

Fair enough. I guess it’s not a monolith cos I have known some people where getting out of the city helped them for sobriety purposes or they just couldn’t be around certain people anymore and needed to clear their heads for a while

i’d say it can be very good…but it’s very suseptible to bad actors and just generally falling apart if key community members die at wrong time.
