Hello everyone, trust all is well. My name is CyaraKaira and I’m one of the transgenders living in South Sudan. My journey has been really horrible from Uganda to Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp where my sisters and I faced so much transphobia including stripping us naked, beating, stoning and killing us.
UNHCR Kenya had to place us in a protection area. Honestly, the protection area was even worse unsafe and full of fear so we had to run for our lives again and that’s how we ended up in South Sudan. We stayed in Gorom refugee settlement for some months under UNHCR until the government had to chase us out of the camp because of gender identity. We stayed on the streets of Juba until we got a shelter through all your support
I’m updating because we’re now facing a serious problem. We have not paid rent for two weeks. Yesterday our landlord came to the shelter with his receipt book demanding payment. We didn’t have the money. We only had a little of it and he refused to take it insisting full payment. This made him really angry. He said if we don’t pay immediately he will call the local council to throw us out. He even started asking why we came to South Sudan, which was so painful and frightening because answering that truthfully can put us in danger.
Getting this shelter wasn’t easy. Most landlords here ask for IDs, and we only have UNHCR registration proof. Being an Ugandan refugee is risky because people either think you’re a terrorist or LGBTQ. This landlord didn’t ask too many questions, and that’s how we managed to stay. But now he’s threatening to evict us when he returns. We currently have 267$ out of 950$ we still need 683$ to cover up the rent please.
There is also a video of a South Sudanese national calling upon other Sudanese to attack the rest of the community that hasn’t managed to leave the camp. This also puts us at risk because the video is on social media, also my sister Tasha uploaded it on the fundraiser.
Please, if anyone can help us cover the rent, we would be so grateful. Your support means everything to us right now. The support link is in the bio/ profile
Thank you so much for taking time to read this and for standing with us.

She isnt in Kakuma, she was in the past. Your other comment also seems to be just listing random cases of people suspected of scamming and not actual evidence about Cyara herself. Her gofundme posts the actual wire transfers themselves. She routinely posts pictures of herself and has been verified several times by other moderators. I have communicated with her over text several times about possible routes out of South Sudan to a country where her rights would be respected.
I understand the need to vet these kinds of posts. But no not every person who has been to a particular refugee camp is automatically a scammer? Like saying “This specific refugee camp has been scamming the queer community for literally years at this point” is wild. Are you trying to say its not a real place? Or that no actual queer people can possibly have gone there? Merely ever having been there once means you’re a scammer? Like that’s not proof of anything.
I just got done reading your replies below.
Thanks so much for educating us all on how this is a scam. You’re doing good work, friend. :)
Honestly, as much as I want to report this, I wonder if it would better served to stay up just so people see your replies and more people learn to stay away from it… :/
Honestly the user might be right about the scam but really wrong about me. I really can’t change that maybe because I tried to explain and still willing to explain.
Well you gotta handed it to them, they are very consistent and persistent.

Here’s research: previous post with different information: https://lem.lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/22719711 The person has had active internet presence as who she’s claiming to be in the post (you can search if you want, I feel weird linking things). Kakuma might’ve had weird scam history, in my 5 minutes of searching, I found all posts claiming of it be a scam where from reddit and speculative. Nothing definitive, there could be something definitive but I didnt find things.

Did you actually read the African human rights commission link? It specifically says that there legitimate LGBT people in the area who need help. It is calling out scammers because their scams will be used to dismiss actual queer refugees who actually need help.
If you want to demand further verification you can ask moderators of this community or others to do that. You can also ask gofundme to do that. People have already done both of those things in the past and she has been verified to be a real person. To do this bizarre public condemnation ritual cause she once went to a refugee camp that has had scammers there is just wrong. It’s an extreme overgeneralization and the way youre applying your “evidence” basically works to dismiss the entire country as a scam. Which obviously isn’t true.
Thanks for the thorough research+breakdown.
Given the info, it is possible this is a scam. There’s years of dedicated effort here (at least on reddit), and the suspicions seem to be the details. The moderator thread, with other people’s details on interactions/questions/donations seems to solidify this is as suspicious at least.
My personal conclusion is that these are real people dealing with some issues. But don’t want to work with/get help from organizations because they want to escape to US at all costs (partially deriving this conclusion from African Human Rights Coalition post). But even with this conclusion, it means a lot of the stories are fake. So ig I jumped the gun
Yes, a lot of stories are fake but honestly it really hurts being judged and jumped to conclusions when you are actually facing the situation.

Please, I never dodged any questions, I answered all of them and I’m in a real situation. Also my sister Tasha knows everything about my struggles.
In the state of world we are in, it feels kinda shit that someone was hands first in accusing this to be a scam and saying “do research” instead of doing it.

Also to clear about my location, I was in Kakuma refugee camp that’s right but I fled to South Sudan and that’s where I am. Please
Thank you so much, I truly gave a response on the same issue in femcelmemes@lemmy.blahaj.zone. My situation is real and I can provide every single evidence to prove it.
