When I came back to the game later in life–I initially played just before Ice Age came out–I was irritated by the changes and restrictions on format. I miss kitchen table shuffle and play situations with a far smaller pool of simpler cards.

Screw meta. I want to play a crazy theme deck that may or may not work how i intend. I want to play whatever I want, and, no, I didn’t want to play freakin’ Commander.

In other news, you kids need to get off my lawn.

Have you considered just playing your way?

My group of friends all has self constructed decks, one player likes to net-deck and keep up with the meta but the rest of us just like opening the rule book and finding weird mechanics to play with.

One of my favorites is one I call my “undead army” deck. Its just a Grixis commander deck (99 card Singleton with a commander, one legendary creature* in a special zone meant to interact with the deck well) running Marchessa of the Black Rose. Its tuned to hand out +1/+1 counters like candy, and (in different phrasing) give all my Attackers regenerate 0.

My partner has a dimir deck built on Basim from the Assassins creed set. Basically every card she plays other than lands and some blue mage shenanigans will trigger Basim to be unblockable. We rule 0 that commander damage doesn’t apply because of this deck.

Magic had like, 120 sets before they started just bundling up different companies IPs and slapping then in the game. Nothing was consistent at all. The lore is warhammer 40k levels of convoluted, and already covered every single trope in fantasy and scifi.

They are cash grabs, but mostly fun cash grabs. A buddy of mine plays the final fantasy 6 deck a lot, and its a really good time. Its intersting to play against, and also a clear love letter to the game.

The upcoming TMNT set looks to be doing some intersting things with coop, and brought in the original comic artists to do some of the cards. That sounds like fun to me, so Im here for it.

i don’t find any of the IP’s fun. all its done is ruin the game cost wise (whoever isn’t boycotting the prices has no right to complain) and just made magic to me like a deck of uno cards at walmart but with different IP themes…oh wait, hasbro owns them…

I’ve had to adapt and just not care about every set release which has been good for my wallet and free time.

I like playing budget 60 and some commander so the card prices generally ain’t too bad.

One thing that cannot be circumvented unless you proxy is mana base costs. Fuck paying $100+ for your lands to make a deck work.

it took me far too long to parse this sentence. I kept trying to figure out why the grandparents calling their grandson on the phone was relevant to the story

Ok so you have lands that make mana and 20 life and you draw seven cards but then only one card unless you have a card that says you draw more cards and all cards are spells except for the ones that are not spells and to cast a spell you need to pay the required mana. Other than that, the cards do what they say unless another card say that it doesn’t.

You can’t send them on their way without explaining summoning sickness! Creatures can’t tap or attack unless you’ve controlled them since the beginning of your turn.
