      Takahiro Ikeda, an orchard operator, said bears have eaten more than 200 of his apples that were ready for harvest. “My heart is broken,” he told NHK television.

        It’s so weird to include that alongside all the stuff about the bears hunting and eating people. I guess they couldn’t find quotes from relatives of the victims if that’s being kept private for decency’s sake or something, but just this random inclusion of a farmer talking about how heartbroken he is over losing like $50 (at the most) worth of apples is so dissonant with the rest of it.

          It’s a little less than the number of apples that you would expect from a single tree each season, which is enough to pay attention to but not enough to make or break you. You would expect to fit at least 300 full-size apple trees per hectare.

          If you produce just 2 million apples in a season, you are a very small apple orchard.
