    House Republicans created a rule earlier this year that will block resolutions on the tariffs from getting a floor vote.

    When I heard it described, they said basically that the House decided to automatically rubber stamp whatever tariffs Trump made.

    Here is the first clause of Article I Section 7 of the US Constitution:

    All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives;

    While this means that they do have the power to create a bill that delegates their authority, it’s hard to see this tariff nonsense as anything but an abdication of their constitutional duties and a weakening of the checks and balances that are supposed to be built-in to our democracy.

    Maybe the founding fathers never expected representatives to just hand over their power so easily. Like, no matter how idiot-proof you make something, America will always invent a bigger idiot.

      Many founders worried over party politics to their death beds. Their nightmare? A demagogue with such a grip over his party he can basically command congress.

      That’s what we got.

      Congress aren’t handing over power; it was already taken from them before the term. Their hands are tied.

        It’s funny that the EC was created in part to prevent Trump, but it’s what allowed him to gain power in the first place.

        Bullshit. Congress is enabling him. They could remove him entirely if they all chose to.

            There’s no way to recall a member of Congress. They would only lose their next election. But the deed would be done.

              The ones with the courage to stand against trump have already been weeded out by retirement or primary. The sitting members are the replacements true to the cult. They have abdicated their responsibility.

        I mean, all they’d have to do is vote against the party line. Even some Republicans once had that much backbone.

      I don’t think that gives them power to delegate.

      Of course if it went to SCOTUS they’d say it’s very cool and very legal.
